Description of the walk

Start : Car park near the cemetery of Cherain (Postcode 6673, Belgium).

(S/E) From the car park, take the road N827 and follow this for around 1 Km to a road junction. This part of the walk along the road with traffic is not very pleasant but it is quite short.

(1) Before entering Sterpigny take the smaller road at your right (South). There is much less traffic. Walk along this road for around 1 Km to cross the small stream "Ruisseau de la Fagne" and climb the hill for around 1.3 Km at a spot where you have a nice view.

(2) Turn right (South-East) to continue climbing the hill for around 650 m untill you come into the fields and reach a small road.

(3) Take the small road to the left (East-North-East) and continue along it for 1.5 Km to reach N838.

(4) Turn right (South-West) along N838 for around 150 m.

(5) Turn right again towards Lac de Cherapont campsite. Decend towards the 'Ourthe Orientale' riverside and follow the river until you have to cross the river. This is the nicest part of the walk.

(6) Cross the river then climb the hill left (East) again towards the fields and walk for around 950 m.

(7) At the junction, take right (North-North-West) untill you arrive again at the 'Ourthe Orientale' river. Follow the riverside for 1 Km or so, to a spot where you can cross the river. It's a beautiful place to have a picnic.

(8) After enjoying, cross the river then for the last time, climb up the hille, always bearing North-West untill you arrive at the top, to a junction with a large view on the valley and the villages. You can see already the church of Cherain.

(9) From there, decend towards Rettigny. Along the way, reach Renglez road where you turn right (North-West). Walk along the road and cross the village by turning left at the junction along Renglez. This really is a village of farmers.

(10) At the next junction, turn right. Walk along ignoring the first junction right and take the second one North.

(11) At the next Y-junction, take the small road left (North-West) that leads you directly to Cherain to reach N827. (Around 1.6 Km)

(12) Once you arrive at the N827, take left and follow the road until you come at your departure. (S/E)

As a resident of the pretty little village of Montleban, I’d like to suggest a route to my fellow walkers and/or joggers that consists of 90% wooded paths and 10% quiet, unpaved roads. Throughout the walk, you may be lucky enough to encounter a family of wild boars or deer.

You will have covered almost 18 kilometres and will see two other very different types of boundary markers: two stone markers marking the former Belgian-Prussian border and two metal markers, still in use today, between Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.The Ourthe river is not very visible, but you will be riding alongside a beautiful nature reserve along its tributary at the end of the route, called Fooschtbaach in the Grand Duchy and Pihon in Belgium.

The countryside around Houffalize town centre is open and hilly, offering beautiful views of this lush green region.The eastern Ourthe and its tributaries are (still) fairly wild streams with sometimes rushing waters. The forests are mainly fir forests... there are not many deciduous forests in this area.

The Bernistap Canal is a section of the canal that the Dutch had planned to build to link the Rhine to the Meuse via the Moselle and the Ourthe. Begun in 1827 during the reign of WilliamI, King of the Netherlands, work was suspended in 1830 during the Belgian revolution and finally abandoned when the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg gained independence. This canal has an underground section, the entrance to which on the Belgian side is still visible at km 1, if you are feeling adventurous. A few information panels are located along the canal between km 1 and km 2, as well as on the Luxembourg side (except for the section leading to the village of Hoffelt).

Set off to explore the north of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and, in particular, Clervaux Abbey. Please note: this hike is not circular and is based on the concept of walks from station to station. We chose to leave our vehicle at the free P+R car park at Drauffelt station, from where the train takes hikers to Troisvierges free of charge (1 train per hour on track 1).
