(S/E) Car park at the church in Chenecey. Yellow-blue signposts. Return to the centre of the village via Rue de l'Église, passing the old 18th-century inn. Cross the Loue.
(1) Opposite the bridge is the oratory dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette. Turn right into the dead-end road. Three hundred metres further on, climb the hill via the path on the left. Halfway up the slope, continue along the small path that passes under the fallen tree.
(2) You will arrive at a crossroads in the shape of an X. Take the road on the right that goes uphill. You will leave the signposts. Soon on the right, there is an unsecured viewpoint overlooking an old turreted house, the church and the old bridge of Chenecey.
(3) You will pass the first walls, where the path turns at a right angle to the left (sign for mountain bike trail 85).
On the other side of the rubble, through a gap, a path passes under ancient postern gates and leads to the old ruins and a viewpoint over Chenecey and the Grand Méandre de la Loue. However, exploring the ruins is not part of the route as the site is not secure (falling rocks, old wells, precipices). If you decide to go in, you do so at your own risk. A sign indicates "private property, no trespassing". If, despite everything, you decide to go in, stay on the path.
You will rejoin the marked path at a sign for mountain bikes crossed out with a red line and descend the hillside on the right. At a sign for private property, ignore a path leading down to the right and continue straight ahead.
(4) At the next fork, at a "Chasse réservée" (hunting reserved) sign, take the left-hand track. After a climb (mountain bike sign 85), there is another fork; go left. The other track is blocked by half-erased crosses.
(5) At a crossroads, continue along the left-hand road uphill, following the signs.
(6) At the next X-shaped crossroads (sign for Commune de Charnay No. 7), ignore the sign that tells you to turn right and continue climbing on the left. At the sign for Commune de Charnay No. 9, leave the path that comes in at a right angle on your right and continue straight ahead to begin the descent to Charnay. The path becomes stony and then paved.
(7) After the first house in the village, turn left onto Chemin de Cravaux. Leave Chemin du Grand Saunier on your left and continue to the stop sign, where you will join the D110. Follow this road downhill to the left for 200 m. Turn right, then immediately left onto Chemin des Planches. At house no. 5, turn right and continue downhill to the end of the street, where you will join the departmental road via the small path that runs alongside house no. 14.
(8) Cross the D110 and continue down the path on the other side. Cross the D110 again and return to Chenecey via the path that descends to the banks of the Loue. Return to the point (1), cross the Loue on the right, then return to the church and go around it on the left to reach the 18th-century turreted house and return to the car park (S/E).
The route includes ledges and unsecured viewpoints. Exploring the ruins is not part of the route, as the site is not secure (falling rocks, old wells, precipice). A sign indicates "private property, no trespassing". If you decide to enter, do so with extreme caution and at your own risk.
