Château des Anglais in Autoire

A family walk, fairly shaded, featuring a renovated ruined castle and magnificent views. Stone or metal steps in some places. An easy walk, but a little close to the cliff edge at times.

Description of the walk

Hikers’ car park in the hamlet of Siran.
Signs with a map and directions for walking routes, at the far end of the car park.
Follow the ‘château’ signs throughout the route.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the small tarmac road to the Siran farm.

(1) Turn right at the farm, follow the tarmac road between the houses, and arrive at the viewpoint overlooking the Cirque d’Autoire. You can see the top of the waterfall. End of the tarmac road.

(2) Turn left and follow the signs for “château”. Follow a stony path, stone steps and two metal staircases to reach the Château des Anglais. You can enter this ruined castle, which was renovated in 2013 and built into a rock shelter. The rest of the buildings (dwellings) have completely disappeared.

(3) Turn round and retrace your steps to return to the car park in the hamlet of Siran (S/E).

A superb walk and a magnificent castle.
However, in some places, you need to take care on the uphill and downhill sections, even with good walking shoes.

A brilliant hike – but be careful: even with good shoes, the gravel is loose and some of the rocks are crumbling. Stay safe – and WOW, what a view!
