From the Centre of the village taking Darton Road, to the side of the post office, pick up the public footpath opposite Beatson House restaurant and next to the Methodist Chapel.
Follow the footpath with the allotments on your right and crossing a stile into the next field. Dogs must be put back on the lead as you will be entering farmland with livestock and please follow the Country Code. Walk along the path on the left of the field following the hedge until you meet the next style.
(1) On crossing the style turn immediately left into the adjacent field (do not continue straight and cross the bridge over the river) and follow the path alongside the river to the field gate where you will meet a bridal way. At the gate, turn left back in the direction of the village and follow the bridal way for 200m.
(2) at the ford, turn right crossing the Clapper Bridge (if you don't want your feet wet) and continue through the gate following the path left into the Cawthorne Cricket ground. Follow the path to the left of the ground along side fencing/hedging passing through the trees and entering into Cannon Hall Country Park (4) Picking up the defined path cross the iron railing bridge and continue on the path up the hill towards the house. You will be able to let your dogs have a run (while considering others) if you so wish.
NOTE: THIS IS THE POINT WHERE YOU CAN PICK UP THE BOUNDARY WALK IF YOU HAVE USED THE PARKING FACILITIES OF CANNON HALL.
Bear right along side the park boundary hedge as you approach the gardens. Do not cross the bridge to the House and Gardens unless you wish to get refreshments from Cannon Hall / Cannon Hall Farm (found behind the hall).
(3) Dogs must be put back on the lead before leaving the park as you will be entering farm land with livestock and please follow the Country Code. Over the staircase style (dogs may need assistance) and straight on along the fencing towards the stone barn at the other side of the field. After approximately 100 meters cross the style in the wire fencing on the left and walk up the field (with Cannon Hall Farm on the left) to the metal gate and style. Bear left toward the Farm passing through the small gate into the wood.
(4) Straight on past the pond on the left and through the small metal gate, down the steps and across the Field towards Dean Hill farm. Past the Farmhouse on your left, through the metal gate, over the style into the field keeping the hedge and wall on your left. Turn left over the stone stile into the woods, continuing a short distance on the path through the woods and over the stone stile into the field. Fork Right towards the road keeping the double pole pylon to your left crossing the style to the High Hoyland Road.
(5) WARNING! ROAD - While this is a country lane, while it is narrow and has high hedges, with the close proximity to the entrance of Cannon Hall Farm this can be quite busy therefore ensure all dogs are on leads and follow the highway code.
(6) Follow the lane up the hill where you will meet the High Hoyland village street and more importantly The Cherry Tree pub where you can refresh yourself, your dog and enjoy the view before continuing with the return leg of the walk. Leaving the pub turn left and at the junction fork right towards Darton. Within 25 meters or so you will see a footpath sign.
(7) Leave the road, turn right and follow the footpath alongside the field to the woods. Straight on through the Margery Wood following the yellow waymarking arrows. Straight across the wide green track/fire break, following the path to the corner of the wood. Over the stile into the field following the path keeping the wood to your left. Over the stile into Hood Wood, straight on through the wood, and over the stile into the field. Straight onto the bottom of the fields and Chapel Bridge (foot bridge) and cross the river.

Cross over the style into the field and follow the path with the hedge on your right. Over the style following the path with the allotments on your left back to the Departing / Arrival point on Darton Road in Cawthorne where you can sit in the garden of the Cawthorne Village Store and Tea Room with a well earned cuppa.
