Around Cawthorne

Start : Junction between Church street and Darton Road at the Post Office. (S75 4HL)

(S/E) Park down a side street near the village shops in Cawthorne. From the post office, head down Darton Road and turn left (North) down a signed track just after the Beatson House restaurant. Don't follow the path right but walk quite steeply down a track (for around 350m) keeping the allotments on your right.

(1) Follow the path down (North-North-West) as it opens out and carry on straight ahead over a small footbridge. Carry on straight ahead up across the fields and head for the woods. Walk through a small section of woodland before emerging into pastures again.

Carry on up with the main woodland on your right before entering the wood again in front of you. Follow the path up through the wood (ignoring paths from left and right) to emerge into the open. The path turns into a track with houses on your left and the main road through High Hoyland in front of you.

(2) At the top turn left (South-West) onto the main road. Just past the village pub, The Cherry Tree, take the left fork heading down towards Cawthorne and Cannon Hall. Take in the views. Head down the road and after you pass the first house on the left you will see the sign post further ahead on the left.

(3) A tricky stile leads you down across a field (South-East). Head for the gate slightly to your left but practically straight ahead.

(4) As your enter the wood take the right path and follow it slightly to the right. Emerge into a field again and continue straight (South-East) across the next two fields downhill over the stiles. In the third field go straight across for about two thirds of the field and then head towards the pylon next to the left hand hedge. The stile is hiding on the right behind the pylon. This is an awkward bridge type of stile. Head diagonally across the next field almost to the bottom left corner where you will see a gateway over the stream.

(5) Go over the stream and up the field (South) with the boundary close on your right and through the gate/stile in front. Again continue this time with the boundary on your left. A gate/ stile appears in the left hand corner.

(6) Continue on a green track out of the field and over a bridge. As the path forks take the right branch then continue on the track steeply up through the hedges back into Cawthorne village. Trace your steps back to your car. (E)

Parking :__ There is lots of off-road parking in the village of Cawthorne.

Terrain: Note the woodland paths are quite wet and sludgy in winter, and there are quite a number of wooden stiles. A lot of the fields had sheep and cattle grazing so our dogs were on leads.

Facilities : After the walk if you don't fancy a pint at the Spencer Arms pub in Cawthorne then if you head to Cannon Hall by turning right out of Cawthorne you can access several cafes, a garden centre and can exercise your dogs further in the beautiful gardens and parkland.
