Description

(D) Walk through the Visitor Centre and down the steps, past the underground gallery to cross the park, bearing right up to the entrance from West Bretton Village. At main gate turn left, then right through a gate and follow the track up the hill to woodland. Continue through the woodland to a crossing of tracks. Turn left and proceed down the path until you reach the A636. Cross carefully and turn left then right along Woodhouse Lane towards Emley. After 200 metres turn right through Bentley Grange and follow the track to the right of the farm buildings. Continue along the farmers track keeping the hedge on your left to reach a barrier and stile at the end. Bear half right, immediately BEFORE the barrier, and walk down to the bottom corner of the field. Cross the bridge and after 30 metres cross the stepping stones on the right.

(1) Follow the track up through the woodland with the beck below on the left until you reach some wooden steps on the right going steeply uphill. Climb these and follow the path through to a cross path. Turn left and after just 100 metres turn right and continue through the woodland up to Bank Farm. Turn left immediately after the farm buildings along the lefthand edge of a field with a small beck on the left. This footpath continues diagonally up the field to the A637 and water tower on the horizon.

(2) Cross the road and over the stile by the water tower. Continue half left down the field to a stile for the approach road for Newhall Prison. Turn right and follow the road through the complex to where it bends left. Continue straight across up the track to New Hall Farm. Continue straight along this footpath until you reach a crossing of paths. Turn left and follow the path into Overton, passing a telecommunications mast. At the road, turn left and then fork right downhill to the A642 and the Mining Museum. Toilets, café and picnic tables available here.

(3) Cross the road and turn right a short distance to a footpath on the left with steps down. Continue along the footpath bearing left over a small bridge, then right along the edge of a field. Keep straight on at the farm access then right at the next track. Follow this to Wood Lane and bear right. At the second footpath sign turn left and follow the fenced path downhill to Mug Hill Farm. Turn right onto a good track. At the fork go straight uphill and bear right at the first hedge and left at the second. Keep straight on through the wood past the memorials to reach the road. Turn right to reach the A642.

(4) Cross and follow the path to the left of the shops. On reaching the road turn left then right at the next footpath sign (partly hidden in the hedge). Follow the path and go down steps into the wood and turn sharp left on the path along the top edge of the wood. Bear left on the track and continue along the footpath to Coxley Woods. Turn right at the road and then left onto a good track in the bottom of the valley. At Water Lane keep forward to reach the A642. Turn right and cross over at the canal bridge to continue the walk.
