Castet Arrouy - Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon

Thirty-sixth stage of the Camino de Santiago. For this stage, due to the rain and mud making the paths difficult and slippery, I preferred to avoid the town of La Romieu. You are under no obligation to follow my route and, weather permitting, you can stay on theGR®65and visit La Romieu. On this somewhat long stretch, you begin to catch sight, in the distance, of the Pyrenees mountain range and the inevitable crossing into Spain looming ahead! After passing through Lectoure, the melon capital, there are ascents and descents as you move from one valley to another.

Description of the walk

(S) Leave the Castet-Arrouy lodge and head back towards the cemetery. Turn right and leave the village, continuing until you reach the ‘give way’ sign at the junction with the D23.

(1) Head left onto the D23. Follow the road along the footpath, sometimes on the right-hand side of the road, sometimes on the left: _please note, in wet weather the footpath is impassable and you must walk on the D23, taking care. Follow the signs for Lectoure on the D23 for just over 2 km until you reach a series of gentle bends.

(2) Cross the road carefully and head along a dirt track lined with shrubs. Pass close to a farm known as La Peyronelle, then follow the red and white markings of the GR®65, which follows the Ruisseau de Lesquère and winds through a valley dotted with small ponds. Continue on to the hamlet of Boué.

(3) Turn right, heading north-west. Gradually, amongst the fields of sunflowers and cereals, climb up to reach the small hamlet of Pitrac.

(4) Leave the narrow paths behind and take the tarmac road that leads you to the top of the hill, at the junction with the N21, near the Pitrac farm. A small shop sells various produce from the farm.

(5) First turn left then right onto the N21 and follow the signs for Tarissan. Continue until you reach the hamlet of Vaucluse

(6) Turn right and drive through the hamlet of Petit Vaucluse, stopping at the last house on the left.

(7) Continue left along the tree-lined gravel track and carry on to the Fontaine Saint-Michel.

(8) Head south-west. In the distance, you can see the Pyrenees. Go down a small tarmac road, cross the Ruisseau de Foissin before arriving at the Lodge la Mouline de Belin.

(9) Continue along the gently ascending road, ignore the junction and carry on along the road closed to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, proceeding to the Saint-Gervais cemetery before entering Lectoure and reaching a roundabout.

(10) Opposite, take Rue Victor Hugo, which is a one-way street. Continue to the roundabout, then turn right towards Condom. Pass to the left of the park with the statue to arrive in front of Saint-Gervais Cathedral on Rue Nationale.

(11) Turn right, continuing along Rue Nationale, until you reach the roundabout with the water jets in the centre.

(12) Behind the roundabout, pass to the right of the elephant sculpture on Rue d’Armagnac, then follow the signs for the Bastion du Château. Cross the bastion, go down the steps to find yourself near the Sœurs de Nevers cemetery on Boulevard du Nord.

(13) Turn left, then right onto Chemin de la Mouline. At the junction, by the bench, continue left onto Chemin de Peberet and head down to the Stop sign. Keep going in the same direction, following the old Auch-Agen railway line for a short while, until you reach the next Stop sign at the junction with the D7.

(14) Turn right, cross the old railway line to follow the D7, leave Lectoure and cross the bridge over the Gers. Continue to the small bridge over the Ruisseau de Jouanlanne.

(15) Turn right before the bridge to take a dirt track leading through the woods. Cross the D36, at the pumping station, to begin an ascent on a small road running through the fields and reach the hamlet of Hausset.

(16) Continue along a grassy path running alongside a stream until you reach a place called Maillac. Turn south onto a grassy path to reach an inverted Y-junction.

(17) Head right to cross the hamlet of Espasot, then, keeping the same direction, pass through Manaut and Marides to reach the place known as Croix de la Justice (picnic area).

(18) Leave the tarmac road and continue right onto the grassy path. Follow the red and white markings and carry on until you reach a junction with a sign indicating a dead end on the right (access to La Bernède).

(19) Turn left, walk past a cemetery and enter the village of Marsolan to reach a metal cross standing in front of the village hall. Walk a few metres to the left.

(20) Turn right towards La Romieu, cross the village via a narrow street (public toilets on the street). Leave the village on the right, at the fire hydrant, and continue to join the D166 by turning left at the junction at the bottom of the road.

(21) Cross the D166 carefully and continue straight ahead towards the Meucias hill. Cross the Auchie and continue to the hamlet of Cauboué.

(22) Leave the grassy path and continue along the tarmac road. Pass the hamlet of Betsurguère and continue to the chapel of Abrin.

(23) A few metres before this, theGR®65branches off to the right, towards La Romieu. Here, I carried on straight ahead and left theGR®65. Carry on straight ahead along the tarmac road, ignoring the paths branching off to the right and left, to stay on the road through the fields, until you reach the small bridge spanning the Ruisseau de Pardeillan.

(24) Carry on straight ahead until you reach the T-junction with a small concrete cross.

(25) Turn right towards Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon, then turn left at the next junction, keeping towards Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon to reach the hamlet of Castaing.

(26) Walk through the hamlet and continue along the tarmac road. Pass the small hamlet of Miqueau to reach Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon and rejoin theGR®65at the cross.

(27) Walk a few metres further to the picnic area to set up camp for the night (E).

A lovely walk through the Gers countryside; it’s easy to find your way along the route.
We particularly enjoyed passing through the town of Lectoure, which offers a magnificent panorama with views of the Pyrenees.

It’s a lovely route, though the description fails to mention the steep climb leading up to Castelnau. It breaks up the monotony of the plain but is tough on legs that aren’t used to it
