Circular route to Rochepaule from Lac de Devesset.

The route is mostly shaded and follows a variety of paths, some of which are poorly maintained, so long trousers are recommended. Access to the lake is 300m from the starting point. I suggest a circular route starting from Rochepaule.

Description of the walk

From the D9 between Devesset and Saint-Agrève, at the lake access point, known as La Chaumette, park on the opposite side of the lake.

(S/E) The route starts by taking theGR®430north-east, downhill.

(1) After 300 metres, leave theGR® at a clearing and take an unmarked path on the left. This path is a little difficult to find, as it is not maintained and has some branches across it. Look out for the left turn after 150 metres.

(2) Cross a small stream. Continue to La Coste, inhabited all year round, and find a tarmac road. Turn right onto the road.

(3) Continue straight ahead on the road for 300 metres until you reach a place called Les Layses and take the wide forest path that climbs to the left.

(4) At the crossroads at the top of the hill, go down the path opposite, slightly to the left, to reach a gravel path. Take it to the left and follow it for 1 km to the end, at La Valette.

(5) The gravel path becomes a trail again. Follow it slightly uphill for 100 metres to reach a crossroads.

(6) Take the path furthest to the right, which descends steeply and is marked in white and yellow. This is a very pretty path to Bruas, where a signpost overlooking the road indicates that you are joining the GR®.

(7) Turn left. The path passes above the houses, then descends towards the bottom of the valley before climbing again towards Le Portier and the highest point (871 metres), where you can see Rochepaule.

(8) A cross, a bench in the shade, the entrance to the "Repaire du Lézard": this is a good place to take a break before heading back down.
Set off again, turning right towards the south-west along a pretty path that is quite narrow at the start. After 300 metres (altitude 842), turn left towards Coméat. Then turn right towards La Grangeasse, a proud building that can be seen in the distance but loses its splendour when you get closer.

(9) At the end of the buildings, the path is blocked by scrub for about 50 metres. Go around this obstacle by walking along the edge of the field above, and rejoin the path immediately below where the passage is very clear. Follow it to the road at a place called Les Grangettes, a house with a water source.

(10) Take the road on the left towards the south for 500 metres, until you reach the D214 which comes down from Rochepaule. Turn right and pass in front of a Ukrainian "holiday camp" just before the bridge.

(11) Cross the road bridge. Turn right onto the road. Stay on the departmental road for about 1 km.

(12) Take the wide path on the right, crossing the stream. The path is marked in white and yellow for 1.2km until you reach a crossroads marked with a signpost.
Turn left uphill towards Devesset. Do not cross the Aygueneyre. The signpost is marked La Rouveure, which is actually only 500m further on. Follow the path, which is again theGR®, and return to the intersection you passed on the way out.

(1) Take the same route back as on the way there to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Plenty of water sources along the way.

Some short sections are tricky as they are rarely used and not maintained.

The highest point at 1,500 metres in Rochepaule can be reached by road if preferred.

Worth a visit

Swim in the lake when you arrive or enjoy a drink on the terrace of the converted farmhouse.
An extension to Rochepaule from the furthest point of the route (8).
A village of 300 inhabitants, all very friendly!

A pleasant walk, three-quarters of which is through woodland, making it ideal in hot weather; there are some lovely little waterfalls, but no spectacular scenery. Be careful between points 9 and 11: the route is impossible to follow as the vegetation is very dense and there are huge amounts of brambles, making the path completely impassable. We turned back and went through the forest. We had a bit of trouble getting back on the route. The final climb is a bit of a slog but makes you forget the difficult stretch through the brambles.

We parked at Lake Devesset, which is much more convenient in the off-season (only 600 m further there and back).

You have to wade through the water to cross the stream between points 2 and 3.

Be careful, the path is completely blocked by vegetation between points 9 and 10. It's really difficult to get back on track.

A beautiful, peaceful hike with plenty of elevation gain.

Please note:
- at point 9, a sheepdog was watching over its flock and came up to us on the path barking, but did not attack us. We were walking with our dog.
- Also at point 9, after the orchard, we found the path again but were unable to continue to the barn. We had to go through the forest. It seems possible to avoid this section after point 8 before reaching point 9.

A "falsely" accurate description. In fact, too many uncertainties and risks of errors.
So we made our way back via the GR trail, which was also enjoyable!

We did this hike in sunny spring weather.
Magnificent, varied landscapes – a real treat! Splendid scents and flowers.
We were alone in the world. Pure bliss!
One of the most beautiful hikes offered by Visorando!
Thank you!

I find it disappointing how easy it is to follow the route.

Because when I start the application to record or follow hikes,
The route displayed only shows straight lines.
No matter how many changes I make on my mobile phone, it doesn't work.
Please look into my problem and resolve it.
When I wasn't subscribed, the route was displayed correctly.
Thank you for your response.

A pleasant hike in the Haut Vivarais mountains.
I set off from Rochepaule to reach point 8. It's about 2 km along a quiet country road.
At point 6, I continued along the yellow marked path. It is very well signposted. This takes you to the Ardèche plateau, where you can enjoy views of Le Mezenc, Le Gerbier de Jonc and, in the foreground, Lac de Devesset.
You also pass in front of a very well-restored Commandery of Malta.
Then you rejoin the marked trail.
At point 10, it is preferable to return to point 8. This is because La Grangeasse is not an abandoned farm but is inhabited by a very friendly Dutchman. However, the path passes directly through his courtyard. It can be disturbing to see hikers passing by. Moreover, this detour does not add anything special.

In total, including the return to Rochepaule, it was 21 km.
Enjoy your hike!

A pleasant and varied hike. The final section on the GR trail is the least enjoyable.
Two aggressive dogs and a horse roaming free in the middle of the path were my encounters of the day. I didn't meet any other hikers along the 15 km. Swimming in the lake on the way back allowed me to return to civilisation and hundreds of people.

A pleasant hike but without any notable points of interest (a few views and old houses), but you can enjoy the cool air at an altitude of 1,000 metres and a good part of the route is in the woods, ideal in the height of summer.
A few sections on the road (perhaps 2 km) and a very rough climb at the end of the circular route, but as of 26 July, all the paths are passable. Some appear to have been recently cleared.
Parking is not easy to find if you don't know the area. I parked on the road before the printer's and then walked past the colony to reach the starting point.
At point 1, the clearing has become a fenced-in meadow, so follow the fence.
Between points 7 and 8, at the bottom of the valley, there is a small stream where you can take a refreshing break.
I met a couple of local hikers (2) who were very easy to chat to
Finally, I went for a quick swim in the lake, which is accessible on foot (follow the path) a little less than a kilometre away.

Don't miss the start because the grass is quite tall at the moment. It's a shame we don't go through the village of Rochepaule. We met some very friendly people who stopped to chat. The route took 5½ hours to cover 16.6 km. Most of the route is in the shade.
