Circular route via the Habert de Chamechaude and the hollowed-out tree trunk serving as a drinking trough

This hike, mostly through woodland, will take you close to the eastern cliffs of Chamechaude and offer a stunning view from the habert, stretching towards the Belledonne and Taillefer massifs, all the way to the Vercors.

Description of the walk

Parking is easy in the large car park opposite the town hall in Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse.

(S/E) Leave the car park, cross the A-road at the pedestrian crossing, and take the Route de la Charmette opposite. Then turn left onto the Chemin des Noisetiers, which marks the start of the ascent: there are signposts for the walk. Follow this path, which is tarmac-surfaced at the start, continuing in the same direction, pass through the hamlet of Jaillères, and carry on until you reach the hamlet of Le Bruchet.

(1) Cross the road; the path is slightly to the left and continues in the same north-easterly direction. You’ll reach a three-way junction.

(2) Ignore the path branching off to the left and continue to the right.

(3) Turn left and continue climbing the path, which winds several times before reaching Habert de Chamechaude.

(4) Continue left for about a hundred metres, then take the path on the right and follow the hiking signs to enjoy the view. Retrace your steps to rejoin the path you left earlier; this climbs a little further, then continues, following the contour lines almost exactly.

(5) Ignore the path branching off to the left towards the Roche Rousse viewpoint and continue to the Source du Bachasson, skirting the shoulder of Chamechaude.

(6) Take the descent, which is steep at first, leaving the path on your right that climbs to the summit of Chamechaude.

(7) Leave the path on your right that descends towards Saint-Hugues, and continue down towards the Col de Porte.

(8) Turn left onto the forest track heading due south, and follow it until you reach the Route du Col de Porte.

(9) Cross the road, follow it downhill for about a hundred metres, then turn right onto a small road that descends steeply. Continue, still heading due south, ignoring the turn-offs on the left. You will reach a four-way junction.

(10) Turn left onto the Chemin de l'Oie, continue to the main road, and turn right to return to your starting point (S/E).

Notes

Please note: after the habert, the path can be very slippery after a spell of rain; furthermore, it tends to subside, so you must be very careful.
The only shelter available is at Col de Porte; the Habert de Chamechaude does not appear to be accessible (sheepfold).
Water source at the hollowed-out tree trunk serving as a drinking trough (6).

From the Habert de Chamechaude, there is a stunning view of Belledonne and the Emeindra de Dessus.
The route between Habert de Chamechaude and the Bachasson hut is completely covered in snow.
Just after the Col de Porte, I couldn’t find the yellow marker to make sure I was on the right path back to La Sappey.

An easy walk with a slight climb at the start. A real plus during a heatwave is that most of the route is through the forest. The final stretch is less pleasant, as it’s along the road (a good kilometre).

Hiking in the woods, which is very pleasant in hot weather. As a result, there are fewer views of the mountains, except when you arrive at the hamlet of Chamechaude, where a café-restaurant awaits you at the end of the hike in the village with lots of good things to eat!
