I prefer to start the climb from the Orédon car park, but in summer, if you don't want to pay for parking, start at Cap de Long Lake and arrive early enough to get a parking space.
(S/E) Go to the end of the Orédon car park to find the marked trail that starts on the left, initially running alongside Lac d'Oredon.
The trail is well marked, rocky and climbs steadily. You will pass the road several times. Reach the road one last time near Laquettes.
(1) Continue along the trail beside the Laquettes to Lac d'Aubert at the dam.
(2) Cross the dam.
(3) Then climb straight up, heading generally south.
Cairns help you follow the right path. There are also some red and white markings, although they are sometimes faded.
(4) Go around the rocks on the left at an altitude of 2277. Then leave the path on the right that leads to Pic de Néouvielle.
Climb towards a visible pass to reach Pas du Gat.
In May, there is still snow: keep to the right to avoid the snow. I have corrected my route to bring it back onto the path as marked on the IGN map.
(5) From this pass: to the north, view of the Aubert and Aumar lakes; ahead, to the south, Lac de Cap de Long.
Cross over and turn left onto a winding path that descends towards the Cap de Long dam. Keep an eye out for cairns to follow the best path to the dam.
Caution: some sections are slightly exposed.
(6) Cross the dam of this enormous lake. Join the road descending towards Lac d'Orédon.
(7) Follow it, following a few hairpin bends.
(8) At the fourth bend to the right, leave the road and take a track straight ahead on the left.
(9) On the right-hand side of the track, take a staircase that leads to a path that is often as wide as a track. Descend the hairpin bends to Lac d'Orédon. The track then follows the lake until it joins the road to Orédon.
(10) Follow the road, pass the dam and return to the car park (S/E).
You are entering the Néouvielle National Nature Reserve, which is protected by regulations. Please respect these regulations (see practical information).
