Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite the Loosthal forest house, the GORNA centre.

(S/E) Take the Fischerbaechel forest road, which runs alongside the fence of the forest house, towards Johannisthal, pass close to the wooden totem (artistic creation) and walk for about 100 m before changing direction.

Blue Rectangle

Turn left onto a narrow, sloping path, theGR®531. The path crosses the tarmac Fischbaechel forest road; follow this to the hamlet of Johannisthal and its junction.

(1) Cross the road and take the path diagonally opposite, to the left of the road. It climbs through the fir trees and continues to the tarmac road leading up to Hunebourg Castle.

Blue Saltire

(2) Go down the steps that go round the large rock and join the forest path on the rocky ridge. Continue to the Grotte d’Amour (a geological curiosity).

(3) The path descends in a long bend to the left, then to the right until it reaches the junction of four forest tracks.

Blue Ring and Blue Disc

(4) Take the forest track on the right signposted “Rocher de la Guérite” and marked with a Blue Ring.
Continue left along the forest path, at the junction with another forest track coming from the right, and reach the Rocher de la Guérite.

(5) Follow the winding forest path down towards "Gros chêne" to reach the picnic area by the tarmac forest road.

(6) Continue left, south-east, along the tarmac forest road, signposted “Gros chêne” Neuwiller les Saverne. At the junction, turn left to reach, after a few dozen metres, the “Gros chêne”.

Blue Disc and Blue Cross

(7) Retrace your steps and continue left along the tarmac road, signposted Neuwiller, until you reach the left-hand bend.

(8) Leave the tarmac road and turn right onto the forest track that climbs up to the Col de la Tête de Christ. Reach the crossroads and the rock on the right on which the Head of Christ is carved. Return to the crossroads.

Red Triangle

(9) Turn left onto the D134, towards “La Petite Pierre Loosthal”, for about 100 m, then turn right towards Hammelsberg.

(10) The forest path runs alongside the tarmac forest road, the D134, towards Loosthal, before joining it at the sharp bend where several paths converge. Follow the signs for Hammelsberg and Pfannenfelsen.

(11) The forest path climbs towards Hammelsberg and Pfannenfelsen up to the steps leading to Hammelsberg (Red Triangle).

Red Cross

(12) Continue straight ahead, leaving the steps on your left, and follow the signs for Pfannenfelsen. About 150 m past the steps, turn left onto the small forest path.

(13) It winds its way up to the foot of the Pfannenfelsen rock face, reaching the passage between the rocks leading to the summit.

(14) Continue left along the Pfannenfelsen ridge for about 50 m, then descend via the small path on the right, located before the end of the rocky outcrop, towards Hammelsberg. Continue the descent, following the switchbacks, to the four-way junction.

Red Triangle

(15) Continue straight on along the forest track up to Hammelsberg. Follow the path at the foot of the cliff (interesting), then reach the summit.

(16) From the summit of the Hammelsberg, continue westwards until you reach the D134 leading to Loosthal.

(17) Cross the D134 and take the forest path opposite, signposted “Croix de Pierre”. The forest path crosses another forest path (Blue Saltire) on the left to reach “la Croix de Pierre”, practically on the edge of the D134.

(18) Continue to the junction with the D134, follow it for about 50 m, then turn left.

Blue Saltire

(19) Continue along the track running alongside the D134 to reach the top of the final rock on the route.

(20) After the rock, walk along the verge of the tarmac forest road passing close to the GORNA aviaries. Arrive at the car park of the Loosthal forest house (S/E).

A lovely walk, but be careful – you really do need to pay close attention to the signposts
otherwise it could turn into a treasure hunt!!
