Worth a visit

The Priory of Serrabonne is a former monastery located in the Pyrénées-Orientales region of France, near the town of Prades. It was founded in the 12th century by Benedictine monks and is nestled in a spectacular natural setting on a hill overlooking the valley. The site is notable for its Romanesque architecture, which reflects the style of the period.

The priory is noted for its church, which features interesting architectural elements such as barrel vaults and carved capitals. Over the centuries, the priory has undergone various stages of decline and restoration. It has also served as a refuge and place of worship for the inhabitants of the region.

Today, Serrabonne Priory is a historical and cultural site that attracts visitors for its architectural heritage and natural environment. It is a popular spot for hiking and sightseeing, offering magnificent views of the mountains and surrounding valley. Cultural events and festivals are sometimes organised on the site to showcase its history and beauty.

A lovely walk, taking you through woodland and along ridges with Mont Canigou in view, not to mention the snow well; and if you look closely, a dragon will be watching over your climb to Roca Roja. Of course, the route is still quite strenuous, but easy to follow if you stay alert.
The cairn at the blue van is hidden by vegetation, and the Serrabona/Boule d’Amont junction is obscured by track maintenance work. Despite the signpost, you’ll need to find the start of the path.
But it’s nothing too difficult.

A lovely route, but unfortunately there’s a lack of information on which way to go; there are also lots of junctions along the way, and at one point in particular you really need to have the app open to avoid going the wrong way. Otherwise, it’s a very pleasant route that would benefit from a bit more maintenance and clearer signage.

A good climb from the start for about an hour, not too many views at this level but what a reward when you reach the first ridge: the Canigó is so close you could almost touch it.
Use the GPS track as there are no markings in some places.
Passages through different landscapes, which is quite disorienting (ridge, forest, stream crossing).
And a magnificent view of the Priory of Serrabonne on the last part.
I recommend this hike even if the road to get to the starting point is looooooong and winding lol.

In February, this route is very quiet, easy to follow and not difficult despite the elevation gain at the start. There are beautiful views of the snow-capped Canigou on one side and the Roussillon plain stretching to the sea on the other. The magnificent Serrabonne Priory and its garden at the end of the route are well worth a visit.

Mainly open route to be done in spring or winter. Worthwhile for the beautiful views of the snow-capped Pyrenees and the Roussillon plain, and the beautiful priory site. Very reasonable elevation gain, but requires effort as it is concentrated at the beginning and end. Easy route to follow.
