Description of the walk

Park in one of the car parks at the Formiguères ski resort.

(S/E) From the car park, head west towards the forest track (no signposting here, but the route is obvious).
On the track, follow the yellow markings heading west towards Les Camporells (signpost).

(1) Pass a wayside shrine and continue climbing steadily. The signposted route takes you across a ski run before entering the woodland.
Further on, there is another steep slope before the gradient levels out and leads onto a forest track.

(2) Take the track to the right for about ten metres, before leaving it.

(3) Follow the signposted route which heads left, starting another climb through the woodland.
Reach the top of the ski run and turn left onto it to reach the Calmasella chairlift.

(4) Take the signposted path leading straight ahead (you could also take the ski run, but there’s little point in hiking along a run for so long when there’s the alternative of the path).
Further on, join the piste and follow it to the right for about a hundred metres, before leaving it at the signposts.

(5) Take the path that climbs to the left and continue climbing steadily until you reach a track coming from the Calmasella car park.
Turn left onto it before leaving it further on, at a signpost offering a magnificent view of the Pics Péric.

(6) Take the path towards Camporells, which runs along the ridge of the Serra de Maurí, offering fabulous panoramic views of the surrounding lakes and peaks.

(7) Return to the track after descending from the highest point of this walk. Stay on the track at all times as it leads to the Camporells Refuge.

(8) A break is a must here. We are in an idyllic and wonderful setting, perfect for regaining your strength before tackling the descent.
Rejoin the CapcirGRP® (red and yellow markings), which heads towards Lac des Bouillouses for about ten metres before leaving it at a junction.

(9) Leave theGRP® to follow the Basseta route, which heads off to the left (yellow markings).
The descent begins on a very gentle slope before becoming steeper (take extreme care on this section). You’ll reach the Étang de la Basseta.

(10) From here, the path turns into a narrow track, giving you a chance to catch your breath after all that effort.
Further on, you’ll reach a car park with a wider track.

(11) At the junction, follow the track that climbs to the left and leads to the crossroads at Creu de la Jaceta.

(12) Ignore the path leading down opposite towards Formiguères and continue along the track that leads directly to the ski resort and the oratory at the start.

(1) All that remains is to head down to the right to return to the car park and bring this fabulous Capcinoise hike to an end (S/E).

Notes

Watch a video of this walk via the following link: https://youtu.be/fGfez6Egy6w

There is strong exposure to the sun between (9) and (E) (a hat and/or cap, sun cream and plenty of water are essential)

Take care on the descent between (9) and (10), as some sections are quite steep (walking poles recommended).

The Camprells Ponds and the Baseta Pond are ideal for cooling off, as is the River Lladure, which you’ll follow between points (10) and (11)

Worth a visit

At the Camporells refuge, you can head to Lac des Bouillouses by following the red and yellow markings of the CapcirGRP® trail at all times.

The ascent of the Pics Péric should be tackled from Les Camporells.

Before point (11), a path branching off to the right leads to the Lladure refuge (watch the video of the hike here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2WT2tmt... ).

The Fontrabiouse Cave and the Galbe Valley to the north of Formiguères.

A superb route with a very varied terrain. The views are spectacular, particularly around the lakes, which are flanked by a multitude of snowfields. There’s still plenty of snow at the end of June. A challenging hike for nature lovers, but one that requires a minimum level of stamina.
You’ll have no trouble following the route if you stick to the GPX track built into MAPS.ME.

A magnificent walk – the view of the lakes and the Peric is exceptional! A stop for a coffee at the lodge (toilets available) is most welcome.

Be careful – the descent (at the start) is very steep after the lodge. A big THANK YOU for this walk

As usual, the Camporells remain a safe bet for hiking. The scenery is superb, especially when you get close to the lakes.
There are quite a few hikers on the chairlift-lake section of the Camporelles, as many people take the cable car up.
As for the descent, there's not a soul in sight and the views are superb

The trail is quite physically demanding at the start of the hike, but it leads to the summit with magnificent landscapes and views of the Perics, Carlit and the lakes near the refuge. After the Camporells refuge, the descent is a little technical at first but overall accessible to many hikers. In any case, it is a very beautiful route to discover. You may encounter a few hikers (but not too many).
