Goutte des Saules circular loop

This beautiful circular route will take you to the magnificent Rahin Waterfalls, a torrent that winds through the trees and rocks of the Saint-Antoine Forest. Most of the route is through the woods. You can visit the Saint-Antoine Cave and the viewpoint of the same name.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Plancher-les-Mines Town Hall. Don't miss the magnificent calvary in front of the town hall.

Yellow ring markings

(S/E) Leaving the town hall car park, turn left and follow the main road, Rue des Vosges (D16). Pass two wash houses.

(1) To leave the road for a while, ignore the markings and turn left onto the path that goes around the cemetery, then continue on the D16.

(2) At the bend, leave the D16 and turn left onto Chemin du Gros Chêne.

(3) Leave the tarmac road and follow a path lined with rocks. Follow this path, keeping alongside the Rahin, to reach the Refuge de Saint-Antoine, built of grey stone.

(4) Take the path on the left to reach the Cascades de la Goutte des Saules waterfalls.

Yellow disc markings

Climb up to the right of the waterfall via a very steep path, which is protected by barriers in places and offers magnificent views of the waterfalls and the Rahin valley.
Continue until you reach a forest road.

(5) A sign points to the "Grotte de Saint-Antoine". Follow the forest road to the right for about 450 metres and you will find a trailhead on your left (be careful not to miss it).

(6) Follow this path, which climbs steeply and winds its way up the mountainside to the cave. It is a very pretty path with beautiful views of the Planche des Belles Filles.

(7) From the cave, retrace your steps to the fork indicating the "Grotte de Saint-Antoine".

(5) Follow the forest road towards theGR®59and the Belvédère de Saint-Antoine.

(8) Continue along the forest road (you can take the path on the right and rejoin the road further up).
Go around a hairpin bend to the left and continue for about 100 metres.

(9) Turn right again onto an unmarked path before crossing the river to avoid the zigzags of the forest road. This path runs alongside the Goutte des Saules.

(10) At the forest road, turn right and temporarily leave the yellow disc markings to follow this road uphill. Cross the Goutte des Saules, pass a hairpin bend and then a valley, and you will soon reach the start of a path on the left (GR®59).

Red and white markings

(11) Follow the path on the left, continuing uphill. Pass the Col sans Nom and continue along the north-facing side of the mountain.

(12) Along the path, on the descent, you will see one of Louis XV's boundary stones on the left, 20 metres above the path.

(13) Arrive in Belfahy at the ski resort car park. Immediately turn left to join the hiking trail that runs alongside the village, offering beautiful views of it. Continue along this trail, which winds through the beech forest and joins the D98. Leave theGR®59and turn left.

Yellow rectangle markings

(14) After a few metres of descent, take the path on the left that descends through the fir trees. After passing an abandoned house on the left, continue downhill, keeping to the left on a fairly steep and stony path. You will reach Plancher-les-Mines. Cross a house courtyard to reach Rue des Vosges. Turn right until you reach the town hall and its car park (S/E).

Between (4) and (5), you will see many snowdrops if you visit in spring. Please do not pick the flowers.

(8) An alternative is to take the path on the right instead of following the forest road in order to cut across the forest road, but the trail is marked with a cross (to indicate that it is not the path) and is relatively difficult to find.

After the (10), you can continue on the Disque Jaune trail to the Plateau de Bravouse, altitude 1067. At this point, turn left onto theGR®59and then right.

(5) You can skip the visit to the Grotte de Saint-Antoine, which saves you a little over 2 km.

A lovely route. The waterfall was very pretty. However, the return journey to Plancher-les-Mines at the end of the route is quite steep.

A very pretty trail, done at the beginning of summer in the blazing heat. It was very pleasant to be sheltered in the shade of the forest, cooled by streams and waterfalls. I found the detour to the cave rather pointless, although the path to get there is quite magical, giving the impression of being a druid or a healer, strewn with foxgloves on the mountainside. A detour to the viewpoint is a little more worthwhile, as is the one to the Belfahy inn for a blueberry juice and a slice of tart! The way back to the village of Plancher les Mines is very steep and slippery, so it's best to be in good physical shape.
The route is fairly easy to follow, especially with the Visorando trail.

A beautiful start to the hike, but no visual interest on the detour to Saint Antoine cave. The climb is a bit long due to the monotony of the landscape, but once you reach the top... you can take a detour to the Belfahy inn to enjoy a delicious blueberry tart. Descent over the last few kilometres...

A beautiful hike, mainly through woodland, with stunning views. At this time of year, the waterfalls were flowing well. Due to the elevation difference, it's best to be somewhat prepared. The descent is long. If you have time during or after (preferably after) the hike, go and enjoy a blueberry tart at La Chevauchée in Belfahy.

The route is very good up to Ballon d'Alsace, but after that there are no more markings, so we had to look for another route on Google. However, for the return journey, the green markings apparently no longer exist.

Hike done at the end of February. The entire first part in the morning, through the waterfall, is absolutely magnificent, a truly magical moment under the beautiful sun shining through the water and ice. The path was damaged near the Grotte de St Antoine and I had to go around it to get there. A very beautiful place with a lot of energy. Difficulty at point 9: the unmarked path that branches off to the right is completely hidden by vegetation. From there, the rest of the walk is not very interesting; it is essentially a wide forest road with parts of the forest that are really damaged... Nevertheless, I had a great time.

A magnificent hike done at -2°C with snow on the peaks but beautiful sunshine. The landscapes are magnificent and the waterfalls magical, with one spot featuring an icefall.

Please note that extensive tree felling has blocked access to the viewpoint.
