Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Chalonnes-sur-Loire station.

(S/E) Enter the station, cross the tracks and take the passage leading to Rue de l’Onglée.

(1) Turn left and walk down this street. Cross a junction and continue until you reach two paths branching off to the right, after a left-hand bend, at the start of Rue de l’Écluse.

(2) Follow the path running alongside the Marais de l'Onglée heading due north. Then follow the railway line until you reach a T-junction.

(3) Follow Route de la Dauphineté to the right, then the path on the left which climbs and leads to the Moulins d'Ardenay.

(4) Just before the mills (25 m), turn onto the path on the right (south-west), through the vineyards. You will eventually reach a road running alongside the Layon.

(5) Take the road to the right and, after 200 m, cross the Layon by turning left. Continue straight on at each junction until you reach the D125.

(6) Cross the road, take the path opposite which turns left and runs alongside this road. The path comes closer to the road.

(7) Ignore the first road branching off to the far right, and turn onto the second (Rue du Commerce), which runs parallel to the D125. Cross the next junction and arrive at the church in Chaudefonds-sur-Layon.

(8) Follow Rue Chaudefontaine to the left, which curves left and joins Rue du Vieux Pont.

(9) Turn right onto this road and cross the bridge over the Layon. Opposite the wayside shrine, take the path on the right which runs alongside the Layon.

(10) At the fork, turn right and, after 200 m, turn right again along the Layon.

(11) At this next fork, turn left and head up through the forest to join a cross-country track.

(12) Turn left onto this track and follow it for about 400 m.

(13) Turn right and walk along the Tranchée des Malécots on your left.

(14) Cross the D751 with care and, taking a right-left turn, take the path towards the Mine des Malécots. Continue to the village of La Haie Longue.

(15) Turn left and head down to Port du Pâtis. Turn left and walk past the house, following the path which ends at a road running alongside the Louet.

(16) Turn left onto the steep path leading up to the Route de la Corniche Angevine (D751). Cross this road carefully and follow the path running parallel to it to the Sainte-Barbe-des-Mines Chapel.

(17) Walk behind the chapel, with the Miners’ Cemetery on your right. Continue and take another steep path on the right to reach the hamlet of Le Roc. After the hamlet, take the path on the right.

(18) Walk to the right of the last row of vines to reach the Route des Crêtes. Turn right onto it and follow it to Beau Soleil.

(19) Turn left to reach a fork you passed on the way out.

(3) Turn right and, following the route in reverse, head back to the car park (S/E)

Worth a visit

(S/E) You can get here by train (Angers-Saint-Laud <--> Cholet line) or by car.
(4) Take the time to go and see the mills up close.
(6) Walk around the old station and follow the path that replaces the railway track.
Between (8) and (9) Find out why this village is called Chaudefonds, and also see the wash house.
If it’s time for a picnic, head straight on. 60 metres further on, to the left, is a good spot to recharge your batteries.
Between (13) and (14) The Tranchée des Malécots and its fossils from a very, very ancient time.
(14) In the house on the left, information on the Malécots Mines and the Coteaux du Layon vineyards. Climb the tower to enjoy the 360° view.
(15) La Haie Longue: beautiful old mansions.
(17) Sainte-Barbe-des-Mines Chapel, dedicated to Napoleon’s page on Saint Helena. A little further on, on the right, the Miners’ Cemetery.

A very interesting route: rolling countryside, woodland, marshland and vineyards. There are monuments and cultural attractions to explore, including a mill and the history of the miners.

This is just my personal opinion.
Hike completed:
- in April 2025 (starting from Chaudefonds, anti-clockwise as shown here)
- in March 2026 (starting from Chaudefonds, clockwise).

I cannot comment on the signposting as I use a navigation app on my phone.

On both occasions, I therefore started at point 8 on the map.
I therefore did not do the short section between points S/E and 3.

I found it easier going anti-clockwise.

The walk is truly magnificent with several points of interest: Chaudefonds (8 and 9), the Malécots mine (14), Port du Patis (after 15), the chapel (17), the viewpoint (18), the mills (4), the old railway line (between 6 and 7)

If you start at Chaudefonds, the section from point 18 to 19 – Les Coteaux Blancs – is uninteresting, following a tarmac road with quite a lot of traffic. It is possible to cut across from point 18 directly towards Les Coteaux Blancs; there is a path on the other side of the road, though it is steep.

Quite a few significant climbs.

Shade: 50%

One of my favourite walks.

I really enjoyed this hike, with its beautiful views. I found it quite difficult, especially one steep section that really made me sweat... It took me 5 hours to complete. I'll be back in the autumn to see the colours of the vineyards. Thank you to whoever created this route.

A lovely walk, with beautiful and varied scenery. The route follows paths for the most part, which is very much appreciated.

We went on this hike in the rain. It was a shame we couldn’t fully enjoy the scenery. But the route does have several points of interest.

Splendid and varied scenery with fairly quiet trails
Beautiful views from the heights and lovely surprises including the chapel, the sculpture in front of the artist’s house, Les Malecots...

Two tricky landmarks for us:

The descent to the right after the mills – we missed the right turn and had to turn back and search for a while, unsure whether we’d taken the right path.
We didn’t find Les Malecots during the hike, so we went to visit the spot afterwards – a must-see

Thank you and happy hiking
