Description of the walk

Park in the church car park north of the village.

(S/E) Return to the Créon road, turn right and pass the Château de Rivalan.

(1) About 100 metres further on, at the Y-junction, turn left, go straight through the hamlet of Marches and take the path opposite which runs alongside and then through the woods.

(2) When you reach the road, turn left, cross the small bridge and continue to the X-junction. Turn right onto the D13E3 and, about 100 metres further on, after the house, turn left onto Chemin des Chevreuils, which climbs into the woods. Continue to the road.

(3) Turn right onto the road, passing the places called La Lande and Le Tart. At the crossroads, stay on the road opposite.

(4) At the edge of the woods, continue until you reach the D13, then turn left until you reach the T-junction.

(5) Take the road on the right towards Buzi.

(6) On leaving Buzi, take the narrow road downhill and cross the stream. Continue along the road (not shown on the IGN map) until you reach Rouchon.

(7) Turn left onto Route de Croignon, cross the bridge and, at the first hairpin bend, turn right onto the road that climbs uphill. Ignore the road on the left and continue through the woods on the road called "la Rivière".

(8) At Vireli, turn right onto a small road that descends to the road, then turn right and continue for 100 metres.

(9) At the first house, turn left onto the path through the woods (not shown on the IGN map). Go through a chicane and cross a meadow, then continue uphill until you reach the second chicane at the entrance to the woods. Continue uphill until you leave the woods and, just before the houses, turn right and cross a beautiful meadow to end up just behind the tennis courts and the cemetery. Return to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

There is a table and bench next to the church.
Beware of pidgeon hunting huts: do not do this walk during the hunting season.

Important: this route is off the beaten track. All the landmarks mentioned in the description (place names, castle names, but also high-voltage power lines, bridges, etc.) are shown on the corresponding IGN 1:25,000 map but are not always shown on the reduced map.
We strongly recommend that you either purchase the map or use the app on a smartphone, which will also allow you to be geolocated at all times so you can track your progress accurately.
The route may cross or follow other marked routes. It is tempting to follow the markers! Unless otherwise specified, do not stray from the route.
The use of walking sticks can be very useful and safe. In addition to providing stability, they help distribute your weight.

Loop completed this Pentecost Sunday.
(We had already done this loop in 2012 and 2022. (Not necessarily starting from this site).

Alternating shaded sections and sunny roads.

Hamlets, houses, vineyards (some cultivated, some abandoned or even cleared), sheep, goats, horses, quiet roads and various paths. Rivalan Castle looks to be in very poor condition!

Be careful after heavy rain, however, because after point 6, the path is actually the bed of a small stream that has eroded the passage. So you need to walk on the sides and wear good shoes. The route on the map is slightly off to the east (but there is only one path, so no worries) and after the bridge over the Gestas, take the left-hand path (the GPS route on the map is slightly off to the west, but this is not a problem as there is only one path here too)

Between 7 and 8, the first part (tarmac) is called Chemin de Vireli, and then in the woods it leads to an area called La Rivière on the IGN map (so Chemin de la Rivière, but there is no sign indicating this).

At 9, you need to go to the left of the large closed gate. The wide path corresponds to the upper part of a sewer passage (large vertical access pipe visible a little further to the left). This means that authorised services must be able to access it (closed gate and wide mowing).

Thanks for this information.

Lovely route with forest paths and streams. Just the section of road before point 4 seemed a bit long to me and I realised too late that there is a path that can be taken instead on part of it (indicated precisely in another older comment dated 28 June 2021).

A pleasant walk combining tarmac roads (not very busy) and mostly woodland paths.
The route is easy to find: no worries.
We did the walk in fine weather. In wet weather, many of the paths are likely to be very muddy.
Thank you for this route.

done on 1/06/24
Nice hike, well described for the paper format.
At 7 the path called the river is the Vireli path;
At number 9 be careful. At the sentence turn right and cross a beautiful meadow, you have to take this wide grassy path, closed by a large gate with padlock (you pass on the side.)
Thanks to the author, a pleasant walk.

Hello,
We did the route yesterday. The paths are very nice but there aren't enough of them.
On the other hand, there are lots of roads with very narrow verges. Not many cars, but they can go fast...
There is little shade on all the road sections, so bring a hat for hot weather.
The route is easy to follow and well signposted.
In Le Pout, there are quite a few paths offering other possibilities.
Rather pleasant walk.

A very pleasant route, a little too much tarmac at the start (for my taste) but on small roads with very little traffic, then lovely undergrowth, dotted with a few castles, vineyards and meadows with sheep and horses.

I can confirm that the only trap where a route error is possible (I made one) is at point 9, "after the 2nd chicane, there's a large field on the right ..."In fact, it's just a wide grassy path at the end of the gardens of a block of houses, a large padlocked gate painted green with a pedestrian crossing between the gate and the tree. That's where you have to turn right and go along this grassy path to get to the back of the church and the town hall and avoid the tarmac.

A good loop around Le Pout with a variety of landscapes, much of it a repeat of a walk done in March 2013 and suggested by another walking website.
Sheep and horses are present, along with vineyards, woods and hamlets. We even saw two roe deer at the top of the chemin des... chevreuils! There's never a dull moment. A pretty esplanade at the start, with this typical little church.
Avoid after heavy rain, as the passage after Buzi is a simple gully that overflows with moisture (in dry weather) and must be filled with water if it rains.
Good footwear is recommended, however, as it is slippery in some forested areas.

Thank you for this tour.

Despite the fact that the route takes in quite a few roads, without too much traffic, in my opinion it's quite pleasant, hilly, wooded, with a nice little stream, fun map route and easy to follow, nice walk.

... this Sunday afternoon in the company of my son and his companion, I redid this course, from memory, without error ...
and I would add that at point 9, "after the 2nd chicane, there is a large field on the right ...".
in fact it's just a wide grassy passage, a large gate painted green and closed, with the passage on the left between it and the tree (1 arrow painted on the tree pointing to this wide grassy passage) to get through.
You do indeed arrive behind the church, and the Mairie next....
I really enjoyed doing this route again.

the choice of words is very important. see you soon

Good afternoon:
At 1.30pm this Sunday afternoon I did "la Boucle du Pout" in fine weather. Beautiful countryside and beautiful houses here and there, and not "a cat" - the path that goes down at the end of Buzi: completely DRAIN!!! point "9": no sight of meadow on the right - I walked to the end of the path, to the road, took the right, past Le Clos de l'église, to the town hall. arrival 4:30 pm.
pleasant route.
see you soon

Hello, thank you for this trail, pleasant ride, between WP 2 and 3 a nice steep section that gets the cardio up. varied landscape with undergrowth, not much tarmac, at the end of the route I stretched out a bit crossing the clos de l'église. The weather was fine and the paths were passable. A very pleasant walk.

A very pleasant walk for the whole family. Very varied (undergrowth, vineyards, magnificent meadows, little-travelled roads). Animals (sheep, horses, etc.) met along the way, castles to see from afar.
With 5 children aged between 3 and 8, a picnic break and plenty of other breaks, it took us just under 5 hours.
The GPS guidance was a great help in places.
