Description of the walk

Free parking at the Haegen village hall.

(S/E) From the car park, head straight north on the left-hand street. After No. 22, take the uphill path marked with a yellow cross. At the crossroads, turn left to reach the Witches' Table. There are some beautiful wooden statues to see on the way up.

(1) Cross the forest road and continue straight ahead, following the red ring signs towards the south-west. At the fork, about 300 m further on, keep right to reach an intersection about 100 m before a left-hand bend.

(2) Leave the red ring markings and follow the red and white rectangle markings on the path that descends to the right. You will arrive at a crossroads (Zimmereck).

(3) Cross a wider path and continue straight ahead on the same trail for a few dozen metres. At the junction, ignore the return trail and the red and white signposting opposite, and turn left onto a blue and white signposted trail leading downhill. Stay on this trail until you reach the junction with the GR®531 (blue sign) and the Maisonnette de Pierre, near a forest road and a picnic area.

(4) Take the GR®531 trail, which turns sharply to the right, following the Baerenbach stream and the forest road, heading north. It joins the road at a large crossroads marked by an information sign and a water service building.

(5) Go around the building on the right, following the red and white rectangular signs. About 100 metres after a right-hand bend, a path branches off to the right. Follow this path eastwards, then southwards after about 200 metres, uphill. It leads back to the Zimmereck crossroads.

(3) Turn left at the blue cross signpost, heading south-east, then gradually north to reach an intersection at a right-hand bend.

(6) Leave the blue cross markings and follow the red triangle (and red ring) markings to the right, uphill towards Haut-Barr. Continue straight ahead, after crossing the D1 twice, to reach the GR®53 (red rectangle) at a car park (information sign).

(7) Turn left, heading south, onto the GR®. The trail passes in front of the Chappe telegraph and arrives at the Château du Haut-Barr. Take the opportunity to visit it and admire the view of the Alsace plain from the summit. Walk along the castle until you reach the Club Vosgien de Saverne sign.

(8) Take the path downhill south for a few hundred metres until you cross the Sentier de Découverte marked with a red triangle.

(9) Follow this path uphill to the right to return to the Table des Sorcières.

(1) Take the Croix Jaune trail on the left, this time downhill, to return to the car park (S/E).

A beautiful, well-shaded route with some good climbs. We extended the route a little from the description.
At point 8, we didn't take the path downhill towards the south, as it was difficult to drive on and overgrown with nettles.
