Bettembourg – Vieille Hage Farm

From the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, this route heads to Arlon, the capital of the Belgian province of Luxembourg, before passing through the villages of northern Gaume. Away from the main roads, it follows cycle paths, country lanes and tracks reserved for farm machinery, as well as a few rideable footpaths. There are several suggested stops to choose from, so you’ll need to pick a few to complete the stage in a single day!

Description of the route

Start by specifying the starting point. If access is by car, state the specific parking options available. If access is also possible by public transport, specify the mode of transport and the route to take.

(S) Leave Bettembourg station via the Route de la Gare and head towards the Route de Mondorf, where the PC103 cycle path begins
(1) Follow this cycle path, which crosses the railway tracks via a footbridge
(2) and (3) After a right-hand bend, at the hairpin bend, leave the PC103 and continue along Rue Michel Lentz
(4) Take Route de Luxembourg on the right
(5) then (6) After 300m, the Route du Luxembourg merges with the PC6, which you should follow when it turns left 100m further on
(7) 200m after a right-angle bend to the left and 50m before the next one, turn right onto the Family Tour track
(8) Turn right again onto the PC10, heading east
(9) Continue on the PC10, which turns north-west, then north after 1 km
The PC10 joins the PC9 to cross over the motorway, cross Rue de Luxembourg, then pass through the town of Leudelange via Rue de la Montée and Rue du Cimetière
(11) Take Rue de Cessange westwards for 100 metres
(12) Leave the PC9 via the first street on the right and rejoin it by turning left then right
(13) Turn left onto Rue de la Gare
(14) Cross the road on the downhill section to avoid the wide bend via a lane reserved for cyclists and pedestrians, and rejoin Rue de la Gare
(15) Continue by passing under the railway lines through the tunnel towards Bertrange
(16) Go round the roundabout
(17) Turn left onto Rue de Leudelange and continue to the town centre
(18) Pass Saints-Pierre-et-Paul Church on your right, then follow the bends along Beim Schlass
(19) Continue along Rue de Mamer to the right
(20) Cross the railway line and turn immediately left into Rue Charles Schwell
(21) Carry on straight ahead along the track which joins and then runs alongside the road
(22) Before the roundabout, cross the road and join the PC13; the section heading west below the roundabout is called the “Nicolas Frantz cycle path”
(23) Continue along the PC13 through Mamer via Rue de Bertrange and Route de Dippach
(24) Turn left onto Rue de l’École, then onto Rue de la Gare
(25) Leave the PC13, which turns left, and continue straight ahead onto the PC14, Rue du Commerce
(26) Leave the PC14, which turns right at a right angle, and take Rue du Kiem towards Windhof
(27) At the end of Rue des Trois Cantons, turn left then right towards the roundabout
(28) and (29) Go round the roundabout, then turn left 60 metres further on
(30) Turn right onto the well-maintained boardwalk through the wetland
(31) Turn left onto the forest track
(32) and (33) Cross the busy road, and 30 metres further on, enter the car park then take the track on the right
Follow Rue Principale to the right to cross through Hagen
(35) Continue straight ahead onto Rue de Sterpenich
(36) Cross Sterpenich and carry on straight ahead towardsAutelbas-Barnich, along the Belarel
(37) Turn right onto Rue du Hammelsmarsch
(38) Turn right onto Rue du Bourg
(40) Turn left onto the cycle path running alongside the road towards Arlon and follow it for 3 km
(41) Take the Chemin de Clairefontaine on the right towards junction 62
(42) (62) Continue towards junction 68 until you reach the roundabout
(43) Stay on the Chemin de Clairefontaine, then the Rue de Clairefontaine
(44) Turn right onto Rue des Déportés
(45) Turn right onto Rue de Sonnetty
(46) Park your bike on the pavement or against the low wall
Set off again, heading up Rue des Tanneries
(47) Turn left onto Rue de la Synagogue
(48) Turn right onto Rue des Déportés
(49) Opposite, Rue des Carmes
Turn right twice: Rue au Beurre, then Rue du Marquisat
(50) Turn left onto the winding road leading up to Knippchen
(51) Return via the same route
Turn right onto Rue des Capucins
(52) Head downhill to the left
(53) Turn right onto Rue des Faubourgs towards junction 67
(54) (67) Turn right again onto Rue de Bastogne
(55) Turn left onto Rue des Genêts, towards junction 37
(56) (37) Towards Viville, turn right towards junction 34
(57) Heading for Freylange in Viville, from here on follow the signs for “Belarel”
(59) After passing through Freylange and Heinsch on this route, leave it at Tattert to head for Thiaumont
(60) Pass through the village via Rue du Marquisat
(61) Turn right onto l’Orée du Bois
(62) Turn right just before the hairpin bend
(63) Continue along the track
(64) Turn left at the fork in the road
(65) Turn left onto the tarmac road towards junction 13
(66) (13) Hachy, turn right until you reach junction 12
(67) (12) Habay-la-Neuve, head downhill towards junction 10
(68) (10) Follow the Rulles and its ponds towards junction 31, first along a tarmac road
(69) then turn right onto a path
(71) (31) Cross the Rulles to reach junction 30
(72) (30) Turn left onto Rue de Bua, heading towards junction 32 via Houdemont
(74) (32) Turn right onto the (aptly named) Chemin de la Malpierre, towards junction 33
(75) (33) Continue along this downhill track to Villers-sur-Semois
(76) In the village, head down Rue Saint-Martin on the left
(77) and (78) Turn left for 40 metres, then right before the school, onto Rue de Han, towards junction 54
(79) (54) Continue towards junction 53
(80) and (53) Walk 20 metres to the left along the road towards junction 56
(81) (56) and (82) Head towards junction 55 for 60 metres, then carry on straight ahead along Rue des Châteaux
(83) Turn right onto Rue de la Bourbouleuse and continue for 750 metres towards junction 57
(84) Turn left onto the road towards Lahage
(85) Cross the main road (sign for ‘camping à la ferme’)
(86) Head down to the left towards the farm
(S/E) Enter the farmhouse to meet the farmer’s wife or one of her sons, then set up camp on the banks of the stream

Notes

(S) Bettembourg station is a railway junction, at the intersection of the Nancy–Luxembourg (TER Grand-Est & CFL No. 90) and Rodange–Esch/Alzette–Luxembourg (CFL No. 60) lines. It is therefore served by numerous trains, many of which can accommodate bicycles, subject to availability. There are lifts at the southern end of the platforms, which are useful for making it easier to leave the station with loaded bicycles or a trailer.
(E) The ‘Camping à la ferme de la vieille Hage’ campsite is equipped with wooden tables and benches, two of which are under cover, which is very handy for cycle tourists. As it has few pitches, it is advisable to book in advance, especially if you are travelling in a group.

Worth a visit

(39) Taking the Route de Bardenbourg on the right, you can reachthe Cistercian Abbey of Clairefontaine (1.5 km to the north), where it seems you are free to explore the ruins, the spring, and even the garden and crypt.
(46) The River Semois flows underground through Arlon, but its source has been developed. The shade and coolness make it a lovely spot for a break or a picnic.
(51) Knippchen: the hill of this name overlooks the town of Arlon and is home to Saint-Donat’s Church and a care home.The staircase leading up to this viewpoint on foot is remarkable.
(57) Belarel: this is the name of a route designed for walkers and cyclists.
(58) A short boardwalk route was built in 2022 to circle this small pond (300 metres) and coexist with a beaver which, according to the information boards, had destroyed its banks!

(61) This walking trail links two of Wallonia’s “most beautiful villages”, Guirsch and Nobressart. There are some possible detours…
(69) The Château de la Trapperie and the estate are closed to the public. They are now owned by the de Mérode family. It was built inthe 16th century for industrialist families who had five ponds constructed and operated as a source of energy for the Mellier Forges.
(71) Alternatively, by taking cycle route 31-32, you can visit the Gallo-Roman villa at Mageroy (1.5 km south of this point). It was here that the famous mercury-filled dice was discovered in September 2000. The site, which is open to the public 7 days a week, hosts a variety of events and features a Gallo-Roman garden, ‘Les Olitores’.
(73)L’Asinerie de l’O is a donkey farm that welcomes families, schools and groups of children for activities. You simply can’t help but stop and admire the donkeys! You can even find out their names, ...
If you’re passing through here on a Friday between 5 pm and 8 pm, you can stock up on supplies and/or enjoy an Orval beer and/or grab a bite to eat at the farmers’ market.
