Walk on Don Det Island

Don Det Island is located in southern Laos, in the Phan Don or 4000 Islands region. Don Det is the most popular island, yet it exudes a sense of zen with its breathtakingly beautiful landscapes. The Mekong River surrounds these islands and offers superb views with monumental colours at sunset. You can tour the island by bicycle, but as a hiker, I prefer to explore at my own pace to better appreciate the panoramic views. Don Det Island is connected to Don Khon Island by the old French bridge.

Description of the walk

Park before the old French bridge.

(S/E) Head towards it and take the bridge that connects Don Khon Island to Don Det Island. Then take the magnificent track, concreted by China, on the right, with a branch of the Mekong River on your right. Then you're done, just reach the end of the island while enjoying the scenery. On the way, you will pass the old French port, where there are many tuk-tuks (restaurants) nearby.

(1) At this crossroads, continue straight ahead, following the Mekong River to reach the end of the island.

(2) Leave the dirt track on your left and continue to the end of the island: you can stop off to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the old French port.

(3) Turn back and walk about a hundred metres.

(2) Turn right onto the dirt track, which leads back to the car park. Follow the Mekong River on your right to the other end of the island. Ignore the few paths that branch off to the left and lead to houses. You will reach a crossroads.

(4) Continue straight ahead, cross the bridge again, and return to the starting point on Don Khon Island (S/E).

Notes

Water is sold along the way, and you can have a drink in a "bar" along the route and especially at the end of the island, which is a very lively area.

Worth a visit

(3) Old French port: small docking port in the north of the island for unloading goods and passengers. Typical houses where you can quench your thirst.

(4) Turning right takes you to the southern tip of the island, but you will have to backtrack to the bridge to return to (S/E).
