Around and on Mont Rouge

A long, slightly winding route to enjoy the beautiful Belgian trails, which are well maintained and clearly marked.

Simple signposting: there are posts with numbers and an arrow indicating the number you want to go to (not easy to explain but obvious when you're there).

Difficult route, even very difficult in wet weather.

Description of the walk

Park in Loker (Locres). There are a few parking spaces at the entrance to Kalissestraat.
Note: you can also park along the N375, which connects Loker to Ypres.

(S/E) Join the N375 and follow it for a few metres on the left (towards Loker). Turn right, then immediately left (Oude Bellestraat) towards number 45 (you can leave the tarmac for a while to walk along the vineyards on the right). At number 45, continue straight ahead and after 100 metres you will reach number 46.

(1) Take thesecond road on the right towards 37. This is a beautiful road that climbs towards Mont Rouge and its mill. When you reach a car park on the left, turn left immediately and follow the car park. At the end of the car park (the mill is on the right), turn left at the edge of the woods. Continue until you reach a right-angle crossroads.

(2) Turn right, then immediately left to join Gildestraat (you can also go straight ahead). Follow Gildestraat on the right and you will reach a T-junction (point 40). Turn left and continue for 200 m to reach point 41.

(3) Turn left towards 43 (barrier) to cross the woods on a pretty, well-maintained path. You will reach a small road (Oude Bellestraat), which you follow to the right for about 250 m.

(4) Don't miss the grassy path that branches off to the right towards a wooden barrier (just before a large farm). Pass a few barriers and take a few turns to reach a small road. Follow it on the right (there is a footpath) before reaching point 60.

(5) Opposite (at the barrier), take the path that leads to point 61. This section is difficult to describe, but the route on the map is accurate and there are a few signposts to guide you to point 61. You will cross a pasture where you may see some pretty cattle grazing, including a harmless bull.
There is one last barrier before you reach a wide path (61).

(6) Turn left towards 62, which is after a right-hand bend.

(7) Go straight ahead towards 13. Follow a campsite (on the left) before reaching Bellestraat at Mont Noir. Cross it and the small square, then turn right towards 14 (towards Westouter). After 100 m, turn left, then immediately right onto the path, still towards 14. You will find it just after joining a small road.

(8) At post 14, leave the tarmac and take the path on the left with GR® (be careful, it is not very visible), towards 8. This section, which can be very wet, is now perfectly maintained. At marker 8 (barrier, see photo), leave the GR® and turn right, then immediately left (barrier) towards 7. The path turns right and reaches a crossroads (marker 7). Take the tarmac road opposite towards 15 to join the N 398 (Bellestraat).

(9) Follow it on the left for about 100 metres, then turn right onto the path, still towards 15. You will reach a crossroads at 15. Then turn right onto the tarmac road towards 20. At the end of the housing estate (on the left), you will arrive at point 20 (a stake slightly hidden on the right of the road). Turn left towards 19 onto a path that can be quite wet at times (deer in spring 2018) to reach a crossroads (point 19, with a welcoming bench on the left). Turn right towards 10. Find a crossroads and turn right onto the path towards 22 (there are a few more benches in this area). After 250 m, find a path that branches off to the left towards the woods (point 22).

(10) Take this path and immediately turn right towards 64. At the T-junction, turn left, still towards 64. At 64, turn left, still along the edge of the path, and pass a large farm on your right. A little further on, after a few bends, turn sharply left into the woods to reach point 65.

(11) At 65, turn left towards 23 to cross a developed wetland area (boardwalk). Then take the GR®. Reach 23 at a T-junction. Turn right off the GR®, pass points 24 and 25 and head towards 33 (nice playground on the left). From 33, a well-surfaced road leads to 32 (which is on Mont Rouge).

(12) At point 32, turn left (towards 31, then 27) onto a path that descends until you reach a small road (and the GR®). Follow it for about 100 metres to the right and turn left onto a path (wet in the lower part) towards 29 until you reach a major road (see practical information). Follow it for a short while on the right and take the path on the left to reach 29.

(13) At the T-junction, turn left towards 12, which you will reach just before a road.
Take the path through the woods on the right towards 13. This section is signposted: it is the Tweebergen trail. It crosses well-maintained wetlands (boardwalks), so stay on the winding path. A nice bench and a large cairn await you at the top of the Sulferberg, just before point 13.

(14) At point 13 (T-junction), leave the Tweebergen and turn left towards 71 to reach a small road. Follow it a few metres to the right to reach it (house). Take the path on the left (towards 70) which describes a wide loop to avoid a wet pasture. At the edge of a small wood, turn left (developed area) and join a small road (point 70).
Follow it on the right until you reach the N 375 (point 52). Cross it carefully and take the small road opposite that climbs up the Scherpenberg (towards 50). Shortly before the summit, leave the road and take a path on the right (a nice climb) which leads through the woods to the summit. You will reach a fork.

(15) At the fork, turn right and go through the gate on the left to follow the path through the woods. Reach the edge of the forest.

(16) Take a hairpin turn to the left and follow the narrow path (gate).
At the first opening, take the grassy path on the left.
At the end, turn left and follow the road until you see a crossroads.

(17) Go down (gate) at the crossroads.
Turn left (towards 45). About a hundred metres further on, don't miss the path that branches off to the right into the woods. There is another wet section, but you can still wade through. Reach a small road and follow it to the left until you reach the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Preferably in dry weather.
There are many wet areas, some of which are very wet. Wellies are essential! One or two walking sticks are also a good idea.

Between (8) and (9), some sections are very bad in wet weather, but many paths have been created to bypass the muddiest parts. You may prefer to reach (9) by taking the road (easy with the map)
The passage at Mont Noir offers a few shopping opportunities, but chocolates may melt in your bag.

When you reach the main road before heading towards (13), you can follow it to the left. About 50 metres further on, you will find a narrow path that branches off to the right (metal gate over the ditch). Follow this path (a little overgrown in the first section) which runs alongside the Surferbergbeek. It crosses a stream on a footbridge (which has seen better days) and reaches a pond. Turn right and climb up the steep slope (go around the fallen tree on the right) to reach a barrier. Go through it and turn left onto the path described towards marker 12.
This trail is clearly marked on the OpenStreetMap hiking map (World).

Note: The section between markers 33 and 34 is not very pleasant. At marker 33, you can turn right towards 35 (a nice climb through the woods) and then 36. At 36, you are on Mont Rouge, near the road (lots of cafés). Turn left towards 34 on a path along the edge of the road to reach a large square (car park), which you follow on the right to reach 34. It's a few hundred metres longer, but I find it more pleasant.

With the help of the map and the hiking posts, you can easily shorten the walk, but as it is, it's a superb route through woods and pastures.

Absolutely fantastic hike, everything is there, open countryside, viewpoints, incredible paths under the trees, trails, birdsong in absolute peace and quiet, passages through the forest, wooden footbridges, superb vegetation, curiosity features, very well-made route signposted by the authorities, benches and bunks that are very useful in places for enjoying the scenery, virtually no cars, very little tarmac. An absolute must!

We set off from Loker Church (several parking spaces available) and joined the route by taking Gildestraat and then Galooiestraat.
As I always get lost when trying to follow written directions during walks, I carefully studied the description provided by joorange and mapped out the route by visualising the key points on the website https://www.wandelknooppunt.be. Using this website, I finally reconstructed a route following the key points 10-44-45-46-37-92-93-43-95-94-60-61-62-13-14-8-7-15-20-19-10-22-23-24-25-33-35-36-34-32-31-27-29-28-12-13-71-70-52-50-49-45-44-10 and uploaded it to Visorando to use via the app. I didn't need it, as the signposting on the ground is very good. End of the digression regarding the description and ease of following the route.
After several weeks without rain, the paths and trails are much less muddy in this area, which is particularly tricky at the end of winter and beginning of spring.
Sometimes the west of Belgium is sunny while the centre, east and south are completely under rain. These two conditions were present on 25 May 2025, and we took advantage of them to make the two-hour trip from the centre of Belgium to Mont Rouge.
Once again, we were not disappointed: the region is magnificent!
The region is quite popular with hikers, so if you have the opportunity, it's best to go during the week when it's less crowded. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived (it was a Sunday!) to find that there was an unmissable annual event taking place that day: the 2nd edition of the WINE WALK. The first edition had attracted no fewer than 2,000 walkers. Fortunately, our route only had a few short sections in common with the 10, 15 and 20 km routes.
Nearby attractions in France include Mont Noir and Mont des Cats.
To the east, in Belgium: Mont Kemmel and, to the north, the pretty towns of Ypres and Poperinge.
A big thank you to joorange for suggesting and sharing this wonderful experience.

Hello everyone,
A lovely little hike, very pleasant and well signposted, which we will unfortunately not be doing again.
Twice we were almost hit by mountain bikes coming at us at full speed from behind, even though we were in a section closed to bikes.
The first time, the guy was alone, and we think he was trying to set a time, but the second time there were two of them racing!
Both times it was on a downhill stretch, which gives you an idea of how fast they were going!
They didn't care about us at all, not even an apology or a thank you for moving out of the way (luckily) to let them pass without risking our lives. In short, these little jerks had decided that it was their territory.
I can't imagine what would have happened if they'd come across the children and pregnant woman we saw on the course.

A very beautiful route completed on 3 September. No particular difficulties as the ground was relatively dry, but it was clear that the hike would become difficult on wet ground. Several pleasant passages over "pontoons", but these were a little rotten in places.

Very beautiful. Tour through the plains of Flanders.

The only downside: finding the starting point. Start from Mont Rouge

The route marked on the map between 5 and 6 corresponds exactly to the GPS track.
There are also quite a few directional markers (our Belgian neighbours are very good at this!).

When you're the only one (see other reviews) who finds the route useless, perhaps you should question yourself.

The information in the description is not always accurate. When it says that it is difficult to explain but that the route on the map is correct, it is actually incorrect between 5 and 6, as proven by retracing our steps...

At marker 50, leave the small road and enter the woods on the right. There is a steep climb leading to a fork where you turn left to rejoin the small road. Marker 60 should be on the right a few metres ahead.

Was the path very wet between points 8 and 9?

Superb hike in the Flanders hills, well-maintained trails, surely the most beautiful in this corner of Heuveland. A little lost at the end around number 50, should we have continued climbing (couldn't find number 60)? Quite a bit of elevation gain for flat country 😀 Highly recommended!

We do a lot of hiking using other GPS tracks, and this one is particularly great because it follows almost exclusively paths and boardwalks, with beautiful bucolic or distant scenery. The GPS track is perfect, although a little muddy due to the rather wet weather. Congratulations to the creator and contributor.
