Around Le Gravier

A walk along minor roads and a path beside the Canal du Berry, with views of the Château du Gravier.
Plenty of parking spaces in the church square.
This listed 12th-century monument is open at certain times depending on the season.
Le Gravier was a separate commune before being absorbed into La Guerche-sur-l’Aubois.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at the Gravier church.

(S/E) Head north and take the Route de l’Hippodrome (D218) downhill (moderate traffic). Pass the racecourse and reach a junction.

(1) Cross the D920 with care and continue straight on along the Chemin de Cazin towards the canal. Pass over a small level crossing, then take the bridge over the canal.

(2) Then turn right. You’ll soon leave the road and take the towpath. Follow the canal on your right for about 1.25 km.

(3) You’ll see a mill on your left; follow the D50 to the right and pass in front of the church. Walk through the village towards La Guerche-sur-l’Aubois.

(4) Cross a level crossing and immediately turn left onto the small road towards Chichevet. Continue straight on at the next junction and head towards a wood. Walk alongside the wood on your left.

(5) Before the end of the woodland, turn right onto a small road that climbs towards another woodland to reach the Château du Gravier (visible on the left).

(6) Continue in the same direction (south-east) until you reach the hamlet of Chichevet.

(7) Turn right onto Rue de la Barelle. After about 150 m, continue along this street, which curves slightly to the right. Walk uphill between fields. Further on, walk along the right-hand side of the horse training tracks.

(8) At the junction, turn left. At the Stop sign, turn right and head towards the church (S/E).

A wonderful walk with lots of different scenery, alternating between tree canopies and open views. Thank you for sharing this route.

For once, the weather was fine on a Sunday for the first time in several months. An easy and pleasant walk along the Aubois.
