Description of the walk

Head to Storckenshon, a small village between Urbes and Wesserlin. Walk past the oil mill and continue straight on towards the ‘Auberge du Gazon Vert’. The road is tarmacked for about 2 km, then the track becomes a gravel path. As you emerge from the woods into the clearing after a small bridge, park in the car park just before the signposts.

(S/E) Take the path leading uphill to the left across the meadow, marked with a red-white-red Red Rectangle, to reach the start of the waterfall route. The path is then also marked with a red ring and begins behind the information board at the Gazon Vert site. The waterfall is visible in the distance right from the start.

(1) Follow the well-maintained, winding path to reach the top of the waterfall, where there is a beautiful view over the valley with the ever-present Grand-Ballon in the background.

(2) Leave the path straight ahead and turn right to cross the metal footbridge. The path leads out onto the stubble fields of Gazon Vert. Climb the hillock, pass under the watchtower and then past a bench, and walk round the meadow anti-clockwise. Join the path marked with a Red Ring and Yellow Triangle.

(3) Cross the meadow, pass an old fence made of large stones, and walk alongside a small peat bog to reach the old farmhouse, which has been converted into a magnificent mountain refuge. Here you’ll find a true haven of peace – it couldn’t be more ideal. The old farmhouse and its surroundings are magnificent, with facilities even behind the building. A pretty fountain completes the scene.

(4) Continue along the path (Yellow Triangle–Red Ring). After a short stretch through the woodland, you’ll emerge at the Auberge du Gazon-Vert.

(5) Climb the embankment on the right to reach the Col des Perches via the path that climbs steeply up through the pasture (Red Rectangle, White Rectangle, Red Rectangle). The path is challenging, and here is the pass, which forms a large crossroads. (You could opt to take a round trip along theGR®5to the viewpoint over the Lac des Perches – 400 metres).

(6) Turn right (Blue Rectangle) onto theGR®531, heading towards Le Rouge Gazon, which you’ll reach in under half an hour. Cross the car park.

(7) At the bend in the access road, turn right onto the path (Red Disc) towards Urbes via Wesserlin. The winding descent is challenging over stony sections but offers a beautiful view of the Gazon Vert.

(8) When you reach a flat stretch, turn left then right towards Storckenshon (Yellow Triangle). A little further on, turn right again, following the path (Green Cross). When you reach a farm track, turn right, then a little further on, head down to the left. At the next path, turn right (Red Rectangle) to return to the car park (S/E).

My wife (and our Australian Shepherd) and I followed this walk, setting off from the Rouge Gazon car park (point no. 7).
So we began with a descent that was a bit tricky at times. It’s best (if not essential) to wear sturdy footwear and have walking poles. We reached point no. 1 without too much trouble (though our thighs were burning a bit )
Then the climb begins… (1.2 km with a 165 m elevation gain: “it’s a bit of a slog” but it’s so beautiful with the waterfall as a backdrop! At point no. 2, we decided to “take a shortcut” (oops!) and head straight for the Auberge de Gazon Vert (about 500 m and it’s still uphill).
A quick lunch break; instead of sandwiches from our rucksacks, we treat ourselves to some very (too) generous plates of food (potatoes, cold meats, cheese) and a slice of blueberry tart.
After finishing our snack, we set off to continue the walk. Perhaps we were a bit too indulgent at the inn (or maybe not – it was such a friendly atmosphere!); there were still about 2 km to go, with nearly 180 m of elevation gain to climb before we could (finally!) get back to our campervan.
No regrets, though – it was a lovely walk (difficulty: ‘medium ++’). I struggled a bit, but my age (72) and a definite lack of fitness might have had something to do with it.

A brilliant hike! The scenery was absolutely stunning and varied. The stop at the Refuge du Gazon Vert was a real treat, with a meal outdoors and a magnificent view. We took the short detour to the viewpoint over Lac des Perches – it really is a must-see. We didn’t come across many other walkers. Excluding the lunch break, it took us 1 hour 50 minutes. Thank you very much for suggesting this route.

Hello,
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed this route. I’m always a bit nervous about the first review posted after a route is suggested. Five hours with a four-year-old and a short stop at the inn is still a reasonable time for this route.
Thank you for taking the time to post this review, and do make the most of the other suggestions on Visorando.

We did it with our children, aged 4 and 10. They walked the whole way. We stopped at the inn for a snack, took a detour to the viewpoint over Lac des Perches and had a look at the red grass slopes. The scenery was varied, so we didn’t get bored. Total duration of the walk: 5 hours instead of 3, but we’d expected as much.
