Discover a village in Thiérache and the Maginot fortifications

This hike follows one of three routes created by the Maginot Association in La Neuville-aux-Joûtes. Along varied paths, you will discover a pretty village in the Thiérache region, set among hedgerows and livestock farms, as well as four military structures from the Second World War.

Description of the walk

Start near the Jean Diot bunker, a Maginot Line fortification located on the outskirts of La Neuville-aux-Joûtes heading towards Chimay.

Local signage: Red

(S/E) Head south along the D34 and, immediately after the village sign, take a path on the right until you reach a small tarmac road. Follow it to the right, pass through the Plaine Jean Diot and descend to another small road. Turn left onto the Route Forestière des Colonies. This is the boundary between the departments of Aisne and Ardennes.

(1) Head left up a slope alongside a pasture and enter the forest. Generally keep heading in the same direction along the Aisne-Ardennes boundary until you reach the Route Forestière de Gratte Pierre near the Maison Forestière des Logettes.

(2) Turn left, then left again before a detached house. Keep left and, following a sunken path lined with hedges, reach the first houses of La Neuville-aux-Joûtes. Turn right and head down towards the church and the village square.

(3) Head down towards the River Gland (which rises at Regniowez). After the river, turn right towards Any. Before leaving the village, head up to the left to reach a small tarmac road. Turn left and follow this small road, which runs along the edge of the village, until you reach a crossroads. Leave the road by turning left. At the next grassy crossroads, take the path furthest to the left to descend along a sunken track lined with tall hedges to the Route des Sablières.

(4) Head up to the right, then, at the next junction, go down to the left to the D34; turn right along the road and, as soon as possible, take a small path on the left leading to a recently restored wash house.

(5) From the wash house, walk to the Route de la Rouillette, turn left, cross the Gland stream again, pass close to a farm and turn left as soon as possible. At the fork, take the left-hand path and head towards Les Noues.

(6) Turn right into the forest and take the path furthest to the right. At the first junction of forest plot boundaries, turn left towards the north. Cross two transverse boundaries, then, at the third, veer left to reach the Bloc du Grand Marais Est.

(7) Head north to another cross-boundary line and turn right towards the Bloc du Grand Marais Ouest.

(8) Continue to a forest track at the bottom of the valley. Turn right. Note the anti-tank ditch as you pass (information board).

(9) At the next fork, keep left to cross the Mulle stream via a footbridge and turn left again to return to the other bank of the stream. Walk along the pastures to the entrance of a private property.
Turn right, pass the Bloc de la Pisselote and, continuing in the same direction, return to the starting point (S/E).

Varied terrain, lots of woods and a few paths. The signposting was perfect and the sun was shining.
The only slight downside was that on Sundays until noon, the motocross track was very noisy... But from noon onwards, it was peaceful, with only the birds singing.

A very beautiful hike, mostly off-road (and even those parts are nice).
The markings were always perfect, accurate and clearly visible.

Very quiet, we only came across a Dutch family at the end of the trail (they were walking up the yellow-marked path in the opposite direction), no cars (even on the paved sections), perfect for hearing nature as well as seeing it.
Duration: a little over 3 hours, without pushing ourselves (or being particularly fit).
A big thank you to Étienne for this route!

A very enjoyable hike! Lots of variety, even in the forest sections.
3 hours and 10 minutes with a 10-minute stop and a few breaks at the bunkers.
Note that there are three routes to choose from at the start: 7 km, 12 km (this one) and 20 km.
The red markings are everywhere.
We didn't see a single person!

Good evening, Claude
Thank you for taking the time to post such a glowing review of this route, which was created and marked out by the Maginot Association.
I discovered it, mapped it (gpxl) and described it recently. I really enjoyed it.
It will be part of the FFRP's next "Les Ardennes à pieds" (The Ardennes on foot), which is scheduled for release in 2023...
Yes, of course, there is (was) an extra 'r' in the title.
As for the plastic, I made the same observation.
They are so firmly anchored to the ground that removing them will require substantial equipment or... a lot of goodwill.
Good luck with your work for the FFRP.
Happy hiking.

On 8 May 2022, six of us hikers from the "Fourmis trotteuses" club (Fourmies region) set out on this route, which we all, without exception, thoroughly enjoyed for its unspoilt natural surroundings, consisting of peaceful forests and hedgerows. The tarmac sections are always short and the route often offers beautiful views of the village and the Gland valley.
A small correction regarding the title: it is "Thiérache", with only one "r"!
It should be noted that the pretty sunken path between 2 and 3 would benefit from being cleared of old agricultural plastic, which certainly dates from before its restoration.
