A 6-hour border experience between Oberwiesenthal and Boží Dar

The hike crosses the border between Germany and the Czech Republic and offers a perfect combination of physical challenge and breathtaking scenery in the Ore Mountains.

The route begins in the spa town of Oberwiesenthal, Germany’s highest town. From here, the roughly 18.6 km-long tour sets off along the border. The route takes you along forest tracks and high-altitude paths with constant ups and downs, typical of the ridge region. A detour to the Amtssteigfelsen is well worth it for the sweeping views.

Passing the Bächelhütte and Börnerwiese, you reach Tellerhäuser, where the “Zwergentreff” is a great place to take a break. You then cross the border into the Czech Republic and hike through forests towards Boží Dar. There is plenty to discover along the Christkindlweg. The village offers culture and the atmosphere of the Ore Mountains.

The route takes you back to Oberwiesenthal via the Zechengrund, where you can stop for refreshments and a stroll.

Description of the walk

Start: The walk begins in the centre of the spa town of Oberwiesenthal (Germany’s highest town)

Signposting: Much of the route follows the “Jens-Weißflog-Tour” signposts

(S/E) The hike initially climbs along Vierenstraße towards K1, the lift and Prjiut in the direction of "Basislager Fichtelberg" (formerly Sportbaude Waldeck).

(1) At the base camp, turn left onto the Ausrückeweg and then left again towards the Hirschfalzhütte. Continue to follow the Jens-Weißflog-Tour through the forest until the route reaches the road and the Bächelhütte.

(2) Cross the road and walk downhill to the Zwergentreff.

(3) From there, walk to the border and cross it.

(4) Turn left here and DO NOT follow the signs for the Jens-Weißflog-Tour any further. Instead, keep left. After a short while, you will come across the markings again.
This is because the Jens-Weißflog-Tour makes a circular route of about 7 kilometres at this point and then rejoins your route.

So follow the markings again and you will reach Boží Dar shortly afterwards.

(5) The walk takes you through the village and back across the border.

(6) Immediately after the border, leave the marked trail and turn right. The route takes you through Zechengrund and back towards the starting point via Keilbergstraße, Zechenstraße and Büttnerweg.(S/E)
