Waypoints

  1. S : km 0 - alt. 93 m
  2. 1 : km 0.05 - alt. 96 m - From the barn, go up the driveway and turn left onto The Street
  3. 2 : km 0.25 - alt. 102 m - As you near the B3000, Hook Lane, you will see that pavement starts on the other side of the road you have been walking along. Cross The Street and follow the pavement right to walk alongside the B3000.
  4. 3 : km 0.41 - alt. 95 m - In front of the pub there is a refuge to help you cross the busy B3000. For the rest of the walk, you will be following the North Downs Way which is in front of you and slightly to the right as you cross the road. It is generally well marked with finger posts and/or blue arrows.
  5. 4 : km 0.66 - alt. 99 m - Bear left at the fork to follow the way-marked path (blue arrow).
  6. 5 : km 1.66 - alt. 91 m - Follow the footpath ahead ignoring the track to the right.
  7. 6 : km 2.38 - alt. 75 m - Turn slight right to follow the the tarmacked road under the busy A3.
  8. 7 : km 2.71 - alt. 69 m - (If you wish to take a break, the 'Watts Gallery - Artists' Village' is a few yards to your left at this point. It has a tea room, which is open to the public without paying for entrance to the gallery itself, and there are toilets.) To continue the walk, cross the road and take the footpath opposite. - Refreshment point
  9. 8 : km 2.89 - alt. 67 m - At then end of the path go through the pedestrian gate and bear left along the concrete roadway.
  10. 9 : km 3.07 - alt. 64 m - At the end of the concrete roadway, take the footpath to the right. Ignore the turn immediately to your left and continue forward keeping the woodland to your left.
  11. 10 : km 3.23 - alt. 61 m - The path doglegs to the right then, in about 30 yards, take the minor path to the left into the woods. (If you reach a dogleg to the left, you have gone a few paces too far and you are still on the main path which can be very muddy. The minor path provides a slightly dryer option and also takes you through some very attractive woodland. You can stay on the main path to point 13 if you prefer.)
  12. 11 : km 3.25 - alt. 61 m - The path meanders through the woodland. This changes its character quite significantly according to the season and it is difficult to describe the route precisely. With one exception (see the next instruction) keep left at all path junctions. Although it looks easy to get lost, don't worry; all of the paths emerge back onto the main path at some point.
  13. 12 : km 3.38 - alt. 59 m - Keep forward on the main path at this point. (It is the one point at which you do NOT turn left. The path on the left is very minor and soon becomes quite wet!)
  14. 13 : km 3.68 - alt. 55 m - Turn left back onto the main path.
  15. 14 : km 3.83 - alt. 52 m - Turn right onto Polsted Lane (unsigned). (If you are pressed for time, you can short cut to Farncombe Train Station via the roads. Note, however, there are no pavements in some places and the roads can be busy at peak times. Also, you will miss some very fine walking!)
  16. 15 : km 4.22 - alt. 58 m - Cross the green diagonally towards the road at the far corner. (There is a green litter bin amongst the trees to aim for.)
  17. 16 : km 4.4 - alt. 60 m - Bear right along The Street until you reach the refuge.
  18. 17 : km 4.42 - alt. 60 m - Cross at the refuge and continue forward along The Street passing Compton Village Hall on your left.
  19. 18 : km 4.56 - alt. 65 m - Turn left to find the start of the footpath.
  20. 19 : km 4.68 - alt. 62 m - At the end of the path, go through the kissing gate to emerge into the field. Follow the path up the hill keeping the hedge to your right and passing the barn on your left.
  21. 20 : km 4.8 - alt. 70 m - For the next half-a-mile, a number of tracks and pathways cross the route. Keep forward each time to follow the path across the open fields.
  22. 21 : km 5.11 - alt. 73 m - Go through the pedestrian gate and keep forward to follow the path across the field. (Do NOT follow the green 'Public Footpath' sign that points to the right up the track.)
  23. 22 : km 5.68 - alt. 82 m - Pass through the kissing gate and turn left and immediately left again then, just a pace or two down the hill, turn right to follow the path through the hedge.
  24. 23 : km 5.78 - alt. 80 m - For the next half-a-mile, follow the top edge of the fields, skirting the woodland on your right. With one exception (see the next instruction) , go forward at each field boundary from one field to the next.
  25. 24 : km 5.89 - alt. 78 m - Pass through the first field and then, at the far side of the second field, bear to the left following the edge of the field down the hill for about 120 yards.
  26. 25 : km 6.01 - alt. 68 m - Turn sharp right and go through to the next field then immediately bear right to continue following the edge of the field.
  27. 26 : km 6.53 - alt. 67 m - The path passes through the fringes of the woodland for a short way.
  28. 27 : km 6.75 - alt. 72 m - Just after the nature reserve sign (facing away form you as you come up the hill) bear left to follow the main path. (Ignore the minor path climbing rough and ready steps in front of you.)
  29. 28 : km 6.79 - alt. 73 m - As you emerge from the woodland, keep straight ahead across the field.
  30. 29 : km 6.85 - alt. 73 m - Seat
  31. 30 : km 6.93 - alt. 78 m - As you approach the woodland once more, bear to the left. (There is a short cut to your right but it is a bit of a scramble to the top.)
  32. 31 : km 7.02 - alt. 83 m - In about 100 yards, bear right and up the hill to meet an overgrown road.
  33. 32 : km 7.05 - alt. 89 m - Turn right along the road (Farncombe Hill).
  34. 33 : km 7.15 - alt. 88 m - (Ignore the first turn on the left - a short link to Davies Close.) In about 100 yards, just before the gate across the road, turn left into the bridleway.
  35. 34 : km 7.29 - alt. 96 m - Keep left along the main path.
  36. 35 : km 7.42 - alt. 93 m - Cross Twycross Road and continue forward regaining the bridleway on the far side of the road and slightly to the left.
  37. 36 : km 7.54 - alt. 92 m - At the end of the path, continue forward along Sandy Lane to the T-junction.
  38. 37 : km 7.66 - alt. 93 m - Turn left onto Ballfield Road
  39. 38 : km 7.86 - alt. 92 m - At the end of Ballfield Road, continue round the sharp band to the right and pass the 'Weston Close' sign on your left.
  40. 39 : km 7.89 - alt. 92 m - Almost immediately, the road bends sharply to the left and down the hill.
  41. 40 : km 7.93 - alt. 89 m - Continue forward along the footpath which drops steeply and down steps in some places.
  42. 41 : km 8.03 - alt. 67 m - Turn right onto Upper Manor Road
  43. 42 : km 8.17 - alt. 54 m - At the cross-roads, with The Cricketers pub on your left, cross NIghtingale Road and continue down Upper Manor Road. - Pub
  44. 43 : km 8.23 - alt. 48 m - Continue forward to cross the railway via the footbridge. (Ignore Tottenham Road to your left.)
  45. 44 : km 8.26 - alt. 46 m - Turn left onto Marshall Road
  46. 45 : km 8.34 - alt. 45 m - Continue forward along the footpath.
  47. 46 : km 8.44 - alt. 44 m - The footpath emerges into Farncombe Village where you will find a good range of shops and cafes. The rail-station is in front of you with the London bound platform over the level-crossing to your left and the Portsmouth bound platform to your right. - Refreshment point
  48. E : km 8.62 - alt. 44 m
