Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 124 m - Exit the car park and turn left onto East Common road, with the golf course on your right, follow the road towards Ayres End Lane (there’s a wide grass verge to walk along in places)
  2. 2 : km 0.39 - alt. 119 m - Turn left onto Ayres End Lane, take care whilst you walk approximately 30 metres along the road. Look out for the public footpath sign on your right, next to an old wooden gate. The sign and entrance to the footpath are sometimes obscured by foliage and could be missed
  3. 3 : km 0.69 - alt. 117 m - Follow the well-trodden footpath with lovely views across farmland. Eventually the path slopes downhill, at the bottom of the hill turn right, followed by a sharp left turn leading onto a wider farm track. Follow this hedge-lined track as it climbs uphill, passing a small woodland on your right and farmland on your left.
  4. 4 : km 1.62 - alt. 123 m - At the top of your hill turn left to join the single-track drive leading to Cheapside Farm
  5. 5 : km 1.98 - alt. 122 m - Follow the track as it takes you through the farm walking in between 2 barns. Pass through the metal gate and head diagonally across the field towards the next metal gate (in the direction of the tall telecommunications pole)
  6. 6 : km 2.18 - alt. 122 m - Pass through the second metal gate onto the Hertfordshire Way path leading over the railway bridge. Notice the entrance to Heartwood Forest immediately on your left – which you’ll pass through on your return leg
  7. 7 : km 2.33 - alt. 121 m - Follow the hedge-lined Hertfordshire Way path which eventually slopes gently downhill. After approximately 200/300 metres turn left through a wooden gate to enter Heartwood Forest
  8. 8 : km 3.07 - alt. 103 m - Head towards the entrance to Langley Wood but instead of entering the wood (unless you fancy a deviation), turn left and follow the well-trodden grass route that follows the outer edge of the wood. (If you’re not familiar with this section of Heartwood Forest, there are lots of different grass routes – feel free to explore or take a breather on one of the benches)
  9. 9 : km 3.45 - alt. 118 m - With Langley Wood on your right, follow the path as it climbs gently uphill. Eventually you come to a junction, bear right for a few meters, then sharp left to continue along a straight hedge-lined path
  10. 10 : km 3.84 - alt. 124 m - When the hedge comes to an end take a sharp left and follow the wide grass path all the way back to the Heartwood Forest wooden entrance gate that you passed after walking over the railway bridge
  11. 11 : km 4.25 - alt. 121 m - Head back over the railway bridge and re-trace your footsteps all the way back to your starting point
  12. S/E : km 6.51 - alt. 124 m
