Description

Start : Stanner's Lane opposite Whitworth Hall and Country Park (DL16 7QX) Grid ref. NZ 237 343

(S) From Whitworth Road go through the kissing gate in the corner of the field, not into the car park, and walk along the edge of the field (North-East) passing the information board before entering the trees. As you emerge from the trees, continue in the same direction along the hedgerow going through 2 more kissing gates.

(1) As you enter the wooded area the path joins a wider track, turn right and follow the track down and across Burton Beck. As you emerge from the trees, bear left continuing in an Easterly direction.

(2) When you reach the start of the housing estate, follow the path around the edge of the wooded area (North-East). At the end of the housing estate, the path turns Northwards and back into woodland. Cross the Valley Burn foot bridge and then follow the parth to the left.

(3) You will see Mill Lane through the trees, turn right and follow the path which runs parallel to Mill Lane until you come to a junction, turn right (East) and follow the path further into the woodland away from Mill Lane. Follow the path around the field boundary and over stiles. At the edge of the field the path turns left (North-East) and emerges in Tudhoe Village.

(4) Turn right (South-East) and follow the footpath around the village green. At the end of the green, turn left onto a gravel track which goes between the houses (North-East).

(5) At the point where the trrack bends sharply to the right, go straight on follow the footpath in the same North-East direction. Head straight across the open farmland to the hedgeline. The path continues in the same direction along this hedgeline. As you reach the pylon the path will deviate slightly to the right to continue on the otherside of the hedgerow. At the end of the field, cross the stile and the foodbridge over Nickynack Beck to emerge onto Chair Lane.

(6) Cross Chair Lane into Salvin Street and immediately turn left (North-West) into Wood View taking the footpath in this direction with Nickynack Beck on your left. Follow the beck until you reach a T-junction in the path, turn right (North-East) keeping Nickynack Beck on your left until you reach the River Wear. Continue to walk along the south bank of the Wear. Walk under Croxdale Viaduct.

(7) When you reach the road, turn left and cross Sunderland Bridge over the Wear. Turn immediately right (North-East) following the track northeast until it becomes a path. This emerges onto the roundabout at the A167. Cross the roundabout to the Honest Lawyer (E).
