Weardale Way Short Walk - Sunderland Bridge to Durham City Centre

This walk is a little more challenging and includes some steep gradients but finishes with a more leisurely walk along the river banks in the city itself finishing at Brown's Boat House next to Elvet Bridge. Along the way the route passes several farms, Croxdale Hall with its Chapel and Shincliffe Hall. These are closed to the public but make good route points.

Description

(D) From the Honest Lawyer, cross the roundabout into Browney Lane signposted to Crook.

(1) Turn left and cross Sunderland Bridge note Croxdale Viaduct in the distance. At the far side of the bridge turn left onto Bridle Road and walk under the road.

(2) When you come to a junction of paths, continue straight over the cattle grid crossing Croxdale Beck.

(3) Take the footpath to your right through the trees and pass in front of Croxdale Hall. At the other side of the green with the chapel on it, turn left and walk around the buildings following the track in a north-easterly direction.

(4) The track will eventually pass Croxdale Wood House and then bend around in a south-easterly direction before heading north again. This track follows the treeline.

(5) Pass through the gate at High Butterby farm. Where the track bends to the right, go straight on following the footpath into the woods. Following the path always keeping left until you cross two footbridges and reach the Wear river bank again. Follow this for a short distance then follow the path in a northerly direction.

(6) After passing Shincliffe Hall the path will join Hall Lane. Follow Hall Lane past the garden centre until it reaches the main road (A177) by the Rose Tree.

(7) Cross the road and follow the track alongside the River Wear again. The university sports pitches will be on the other side of the river.

(8) There is a choice of two routes at the footbridge from the sports centre, either follow the riverside path around the curve in the wear OR take a diversion to the right to Old Durham Gardens.

(9) If visited Old Durham Gardens, on your return turn right and rejoin the riverside footpath. Continue following the riverside path to Brown's Boathouse (A).
