Kelloe to Sherburn House, Way of Love

This is a largely rural walk, taking in the villages of Kelloe and Cassop. The walk follows field boundaries and woodland, giving a view of County Durham which would have been very different 50 years ago when the collieries were still operating. Keep a look out for evidence of the mining heritage of County Durham during your walk.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The Way of Love - Hartlepool to Durham

Description

(S) From St Helen's Church, walk southeast along Sharon Avenue and pick up the Kelloe Way/Way of Love on your right (northeast) by the standing stones.

(1) When you reach the B1278 cross the road and pick up the narrow path which enters East Hetton Woods, bearing east and then turning left (northwest) at the path junction onto a wider track, continue walking through the woods.

(2) The track will turn northwards and then meet another track on a bend, turn right and continue along the track in a northeasterly direction until you emerge from the trees.

(3) Turn left (northwest) and follow the path along the edge of the woodland, there are staggered gates on this path. There will be farmland on your right. When you reach Cassop, continue straight ahead along Lynn Crescent. At the end of Lynn Crescent, turn left into Front Street.

(4) Cross the road opposite the post office and follow the lane towards the fishing pond, pass the sewage works on your right and take the northerly path past Cassop Bogs. Ccross the stile and continue to follow the path through the treeline (northwest), cross the stile and continue straight ahead at the at the crossing path.

(5) There are a number of stiles along the path. When you reach the tarmac road, cross the road and cross the ladder-stile, continue in a westerly direction along the fence. When you reach the road cross straight over and follow the path on the other side of the road through the field. Cross a further road and cross the second field. Alternative route, to avoid the ladder-stile and the overgrown access points you can follow the road to th roundabout crossing straight across and rejoining the path at (6).

(6) Cross a further road and take up the farm track opposite, still following a westerly direction initially but then turning northwest crossing fields. The path will run along the edge of some trees and then emerge into another field. Look to your left, you should see a bend in a lane.

(7) Continue across the field looking to your right for another gate and a stile. Turn left when you see the stile and cross it.

(8) Turn right into the lane and walk past Whitwell Grange. The road will bend to the right.

(9) After the bend, look for the footpath sign to your left, take this path into the wooded area (northwest) and continue until you emerge onto Shincliffe Lane (E)
