Wargrave to Twyford railway stations

Enjoy a mostly level walk with no stiles between Wargrave to Twyford railway stations. A shorter version is available to avoid some muddy paths in the Stanlake area but there is no footway across the railway bridge and care needs to be taken.

Description

Start : Wargrave Railway Station (RG10 8EU) Grid ref. SU 780 783

(S/E) From the station turn right along Station Rd. At the junction with the main road (A321) cross carefully, turn right.

(1) Soon, left on a restricted bridleway past Leafy Lane House. To visit Wargrave chalk pit, which is being managed as a nature reserve by local volunteers, cross a minor road and keep ahead to the entrance. Otherwise, bear right on the enclosed public footpath which skirts the pit.

(2) On reaching the road turn right on a footway. Just before the next corner turn right on the public bridleway and pass through the poly-tunneled Sheeplands Farm. Keep ahead through the gate.

(3) Then carefully cross the busy A4 to bridleway ahead. At the next field boundary follow the path as it bears left through the centre of the field. Cross the main road into New Rd and immediately turn left on a bridleway with a hedge on the right. Bear right around copse.

(4) Then left with entrance to Northbury Farm on right. Turn right on a minor road, cross B3024 road and enter Church Lane which leads to the late 12th century church of St James.

For a shorter walk, turn right alongside the church, keep left at a road junction, and turn left at the crossroads. Go over the railway bridge, now with Stanlake Meadow recreation ground on the right. Enter the recreation ground and bear slightly right, making for the end of the green railings at the corner of the field.

(5) For a longer walk keep left into Southbury Lane, cross the railway and follow the lane past Southbury Farm and Meadowside. Just past cottages on the corner, take the footpath on the right across the centre of the field.

Cross the ditch and go through two swing gates with Stanlake Manor on higher ground to the left. Reaching the road, turn left and cross the bridge if visiting the winery cellar shop. The entrance is a little way further on. If not visiting the shop, cross the road and just before the bridge go down the steps on the right.

(6) Turn right at the path junction passing mature oak trees. Cross Broad Hinton and soon turn right with children's playground on the left. Continue up Very Close, turning left at the road junction to reach the main road at the roundabout.

(7) Carefully cross to the footway half left which leads to the entrance to Stanlake Meadow recreation ground. Bear left across the playing fields aiming for the far corner by the green railings. Turn right at the road and cross the railway bridge.

(8) At the far side cross the road carefully to the footpath which leads down to the station and start. (S/E)
