By car: From the town of Nelson on the South Island, follow the west coast on Route 60. At the entrance to Takaka, turn right towards Pôhara on Motupipi Street, then right onto Abel Tasman Dr, and continue along the east coast towards Ligar Bay and Tata Beach. Pass Abel Tasman Point to reach Wainui Bay and, still following the coast, cross the bridge over the Wainui River. At the next intersection, leave Abel Tasman Dr on your left and turn right towards Wainui Falls car park, as indicated on a sign. Park in the car park for the proposed circuit.
(S/E) From the car park, head south-west to join the Wainui Falls Track. Continue across the meadows in the same direction. Follow the river and enter the forest. Shortly afterwards, as the valley narrows, the track climbs to overlook the winding river, which can be seen rushing through its rocky bed. Follow it again to cross a suspension bridge and reach a platform.
Admire the river as it plunges into a pool, where those who wish to can swim and brave the strong current of the cool water.
(1) The return journey is made in the opposite direction, along the same path (S/E).
