Visit to Saint-Helier in Jersey

This urban walk can be done in 2 parts.
The first in the city is 3.5 km long and can be extended to the marina area and Fort Elisabeth by a further 2.5 km.

Description of the walk

Departure from Place de la Libération

(S/E) Head towards Weighbridge Place and go to the Jersey Museum (to the right of the Royal Yacht Hotel), where you will also findthe Tourist Office.

(1) Turn left and continue to the end of Chemin du Bel, where you will see a mural at the top of the steps. Go down Pier Road on the left until you reach Mulcaster Street. Note the façade of The Lamplighter pub on the left. Take Bond Street to reachthe Parish Church (10th century). Walk along it on your right, cross Church Street/rue Trousse Cotillon (there used to be a small stream flowing through this alley) to reach Royal Square.

(2) Cross Royal Square. This was the market square (Towpath) until 1802.Continue via Peirson Place, turn right into King Street, "Rue de Derrière", the main shopping street. Cross Hilgrove Street, known locally as French Lane, where Breton farm workers used to gather.

(3) Enter the Central Market on the left with its fountain in the centre. Leave the market via Market Street, then turn left into Halkett Street. At Beresford Street, turn right and walk 50 metres to the small square to see the statues of Jersey cows(la Vaque dé Jèrri).Note the calf watching a toad (symbolising the inhabitants of Jersey). Retrace your steps and turn right into Fish Market (L'Marchi à Paîsson) on Beresford Street.

(4) Leave the market via the Minden Place exit and turn left. Walk to Halkett Place, turn right (north) to the Mechanics Institute. Look at its façade and the Methodist church at the end of the street.

(5) Retrace your steps through the market, crossing via the west alley, then continue to King Street, the large pedestrian street on the right. Follow the street and turn left onto Brook Street, then immediately left onto Vine Street until you reach Royal Square. Keep to the right and exit via Library Place until you reach the small square (kiosk) and turn right onto New Cut. Continue along New Street until you reach No. 16 to visit the Georgian House.

(6) Retrace your steps to King Street and turn right at Rivoli and its clock with automata, which symbolise a scene from Jersey life every hour. At Charing Cross, look at the "toad" at the top of the column. "Toads" is the nickname given by the inhabitants of Guernsey to the inhabitants of Jersey, who are themselves called "donkeys". There are no toads on the other Channel Islands, and donkeys were once used to transport goods through the steep streets of Saint Peter Port.

(7) Go up York Street and take Dumaresq Street to the restored mural "La Voix de son Maitre" (The Voice of his Master) from the former F. Foot shop.

These listed buildings (acquired by the National Trust) are one of the best surviving examples of the mid-18th and early 19th century townscape in Saint Helier.
Go back and take York Street on the right until you reach The Parade, cross the park and turn left onto Gloucester Street.

Pass the Opera House until you reach the four-lane road, which you will need to cross at the traffic lights. Head towards the Jardins de la Mer and turn right onto the seafront until you reach the start of the causeway and the ticket office for Elizabeth Castle.

(8) Follow the seafront to Elizabeth Marina. Continue to the end of the pier.

(9) Retrace your steps and walk along the marina on your right until you reach the "Arbre de la Liberté" (Tree of Liberty). Walk along the quay on your right, pass the artwork "The Sail", cross Waterfront Gardens, continue straight ahead until you reach St Helier Marina at "The Needle". Turn left to go around the basin and reach the Maritime Museum opposite .

(10) Go around the museum building to reachthe"Steam Clock" (no longer in service)

Head towards Liberation Square ( crossing carefully at the traffic lights). The 1901 building behind the statue was the terminus of the railway line to St Aubin, which operated from 1870 to 1936. Now converted into a shopping centre, you can take a look around. (S/E)
