Description of the walk

In Cournols, park in the cemetery car park on the edge of the D788.

(S/E) Set off along the small road at the corner of the cemetery, heading east. It becomes a track further on.

(1) Ignore a path on the left and continue along this track, which is covered in patches of old tarmac. At the next junction, take the path on the right.

(2) At the T-junction shortly afterwards, turn left. The path becomes grassy. When you reach a gate, you are entering the abbey’s grounds. The monks keep livestock, which explains the presence of several gates along their paths. Take the passageway to the left of the gate.

(3) Shortly afterwards, leave the track and take a path leading down to the right, running alongside a fence on your right. Further down, you’ll reach a track leading to a meadow. Continue straight ahead. Further on, ignore another track leading to the meadows on the right. Pass a bin on the left of the path, then go through a gate (path on the left), and arrive at the village of Randol, on a street.

(4) This is a village with lovely lodges for retreats within the abbey. The village’s old houses have been restored. Continue straight along the path, passing a well on the left. At the crossroads, follow Rue Étienne de Randol, veering slightly to the right. Further on, you can take a short detour along a path to the right to see some more houses. Then continue along Rue Étienne de Randol to the site of Randol Abbey.

(5) Pass a sort of Christianised menhir and continue straight on, skirting the abbey on your right. Pass the fish fountain on your left, then turn onto the first path on the left. Leave the car parks on your right. You’ll come to a tarmac road; walk a few metres to the left.

(6) Immediately take the path on the left marked in yellow. Stay on this path, ignoring the path into the woods on the left.

(7) At the four-way junction, take the second path on the right, leaving the yellow PR® trail which heads off along the first path on the right. Shortly afterwards, pass a cross, then a gate (passage on the right). You will reach the junction with the path you passed on the way out.

(3) Continue straight ahead along the path, following the reverse route of the outward journey.

(2) At the next junction, leave the route you took on the way there and continue straight ahead. Ignore a path on the left. Further on, the path becomes a small road.

(8) At the junction with a road marked by the GR®30, continue to the right. Now follow this GR® until otherwise indicated. At the next junction, turn onto the small road on the left. You will arrive at the site of the Dolmen de la Grotte (information panel: Les gorges de la Monne).

(9) After visiting the site, return to the GR® and follow it to the right. Turn right, ignoring the path opposite. Further on, turn right again, ignoring a path on the left. The path becomes tarmac. You will reach a road.

(10) Follow it to the left, then, 100 m further on, take an old road on the right. Pass a cross and ignore a path on the right. The tarmac ends.

(11) At the next junction, follow the path to the right.

(12) At the next junction, leave the GR® and turn onto the path on the right. Further on, it becomes tarmac. You come to a road.

(13) Follow it to the left. At the entrance to Cournols, pass a beautiful restored wash house and its fountain. Continue straight on along the street, passing the church, set back on the left, then the town hall, another fountain and a bus shelter (wall mural), before reaching the cemetery car park (S/E).

The charming retirement village of Randol, which is run by the abbey. Randol Abbey is modern, still in use and not open to visitors (though there is a shop). The Dolmen de la Grotte in Cournols is very beautiful. Unobstructed views from across the granite plateau.

A lovely walk with some beautiful views. A visit to the village and the basilica in Randol is well worth it for those who haven’t been there before.
