Tour of Monte Cofano

A circuit near Trapani. A first part along the beachfront by the cliffs: a watchtower, a small chapel and a small cave, a “tonnara”. Then follows a small climb to head up a pass between Monte Cofano and marble quarries with beautiful views.

Description of the walk

Start at the cala Bugato car park in the north-east of Cornino (1), where a panel describes the hike. The path is clear, there’s no chance to get lost.

We joined a quite busy mule track in good condition, mostly made safe by wooden railings.
It’s a short walk (about 30 minutes) to a watchtower, Torre San Giovanni (2). Ten minutes later, arrive at the Cappelletta del Crocifisso, dominated by a small cave nestled in the vertical rock wall. Vegetation of dwarf palms.
Continue to follow the beachfront, there is a nice contrast between the blue of the sea and the colour of the cliffs. Pass by Saraceno point then opposite a small sculpture of the bishop San Nicola, with a nice view over San Vito lo Capo.

After the Pointe de la Croce, reach the Tonnara di Cofano (3) a very nice building with concave walls. Continue alongside the few small houses and the sea. Follow the path that has now become a dirt track and come to a fence and a small car park that also serves as an alternative starting point (4).

Then head away from the sea following the right track toward the south; the track turns into a path, the trail winds through a narrow passage called Scaletta di Cofano where numerous steep hairpin turns wind between two rocky ridges to reach the top plateau

Once beyond this section there are lovely views towards the Tonnara and to the north.
Once slightly further uphill reach the upper plateau beneath Monte Cofano: there is a pond (GPS 38.103445/12.677350).

Soon after, a trail leads off to the west: it leads to the summit of Monte Cofano, reserved for hikers comfortable with a bit of a climb.

Follow the main trail to the south with a beautiful view over the Bay of Bonagia, pass by path heading left to Baglio Cofano and descend gently (marble quarries on the left, some rubble near the path). The track very quickly leads to the first houses and the start point.

Practical information

No drinking water refill point.

There is the option to climb up to the summit of Monte Cofano, an easy climbing but with some drops nearby, a section with a fixed rope.

There is an opportunity to swim at the Cala Bugato and near to the Tonnara di Cofano.

You can also shorten the circuit a bit by taking a path between the Tonnara and the plateau below the summit.

In the nearby area

Tonnara di Cofano (3). A building that has served to process the tuna caught in the area. It is now a visitor centre for the reserve that can be visited if the warden is there (photos of other Sicilian watchtowers, cool interior to take a break from the heat, the warden can answer your questions and/or explain things if you speak Italian). It's free but tips are welcome.

Hello,

We did a variation of the walk described from Monte Cofano.
Please note that the route described is partly closed (from the Torre San Giovanni to the Torre de la Tonnara). In fact, the whole reserve appears to be closed to the public (signs everywhere), but a lady at the entrance explained to us that only part of it is officially closed (see above). (reconstruction planned for 2020..... To be continued)
So we started the loop in reverse - as described on the site (we went up the mountain on the right). There are two paths leading down to the Torre de la Tonnara. Be careful: there's a great view of Cap San Vinto from up there.
At the Torre you can take a dip and relax for a while. No water or food on the route.
To get back to the starting point, turn around and take the other path for a bit of variety. Or not. As you wish....

I recommend taking the path between the two rocks (gorges) to go down and the path that leaves directly from the Torre to go back up. Once at the top, retrace your steps downhill.

You can also climb to the summit. We didn't do it. But from what we've heard and seen, it seems to be for experienced climbers (rope, slippery ground, rocks....).

The walk offers fewer great discoveries than the one to Zingaro, but is less busy and the view of the Torre and the Cape is very beautiful.
Beware, it's very hot in summer.

Have a good walk,

Marie & Fabio

On site on 17 May 2019, respectful of the prohibition signs, I didn't dare embark on this hike ...

Like the previous "risk of landslide sign forbidden path" after talking with an Italian mountain biker he tells us that there is no problem or risk, here we go on a well traced path with magnificent views over the region.

Thank you for this suggestion. Part of the route is blocked off because of the risk of a landslide, but I did what most hikers do, I went through. I didn't notice any obvious risks.

Hello,

Don't forget that in Italy, you have to pay to enter parks and reserves! On the day of our hike, the entrance kiosk was closed because the path was "forbidden" due to a landslide. But like (many) others, we were able to make this not-to-be-missed hike.

The pond on the plateau is now signposted: it's the GORCO COFANO, a geological phenomenon that's well explained in Italian!

In conclusion, don't hesitate!

For the more adventurous, there's a 10km track that leads to the ZINGARO reserve.

the most interesting part is the one by the sea, swimming is not very easy along this part, the marble quarries inland spoil the scenery when you go round monte cofano, better to leave from the coast at castellluzzo and make a return trip,
