Description of the route

The route starts from the large car park at the very tip of the peninsula, near Pointe du Conguel.

(S/E) At the start, cross the road and cycle with the sea on your left. Take the Promenade Louison Bobet to stay facing the seafront.

(1) The Beg er Wir site offers a beautiful view of Port Maria. It is also a prehistoric site; a sign describes the research carried out here. Continue along the road towards the Casino. After the Casino car park, turn left onto the boulevard to follow the long beach.

(2) When you reach Place Hoche, turn left onto Rue de Port Maria. Walk along the quays with the famous Château Turpeau on your left. Join the signposted cycle path. Head slightly away from the coast, but also away from the road!

(3) You can take a short detour to Le Vivier; the building is visible on your left, right by the sea (viewpoint).
Then continue along the cycle path. Before the campsite, turn left and then right 200 m further on. Ride alongside a small pond, then rejoin the path opposite by crossing Rue de Port Kerné. Continue along the path, taking care on the sandy sections.

(4) At the viewpoint near Port Bara, the beach is magnificent but dangerous – please note that swimming is prohibited! Get back on the road, continuing to follow the cycle route markings.

(5) At the car park, you can stop off to visit Port Blanc Beach or the Pointe du Percho (viewpoint). Get back on the road and, on reaching the village of Portivy, watch out for one-way streets. The route forms a short circular loop to reach the village harbour, following the direction of traffic.

(6) Continue along the road, heading away from Portivy. Cross the railway line, then the departmental road at the double roundabout. Immediately afterwards, turn right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle.

(7) View of the harbour at Saint-Pierre-Quiberon. Continue along the road past the church. Note the rows of menhirs on your right. Carry on straight ahead. After a few kilometres, pass through the village of Saint-Julien and arrive at Port Haliguen.

(8) Go round the harbour and continue along the coastal road. On the left, look out for Fort Neuf. On the horizon, the pine trees of Pointe du Conguel – you can see the finish line! Return to the car park at Pointe du Conguel (S/E).

Worth a visit

(S/E) From the car park at Pointe du Conguel, do take the time to walk around the headland (allow 30 mins).

(5) Fort Penthièvre, visible from Pointe du Percho on the way to Portivy, is not open to visitors. It does, however, offer a lovely view. To get there, you can take a detour by following the cycle signs to the left as you leave the village of Portivy.

Although it’s a lovely route, it follows a lot of roads. It could almost be designed for bikes. We had to alter the route to stick more closely to the GR34. It’s a shame. Thanks all the same to the creator.
