The Spotted Dog circular, Cold Ash

Start : The Spotted Dog, Cold Ash (RG18 9PR) Grid ref. SU 513697

(S/E) Take the lane between The Spotted Dog and The Castle, and follow it up to the road.

(1) Turn left for 250yds.

(2) Take the track downhill on the right.

(3) At the T-junction at the bottom, go left and immediately right down a footpath through fields. It bears left and enters a wood at a stile.

(4) After 250yds, bear half right and pass buildings in a clearing. Keep straight on for 400yds till you come out on a rough track, then go left. The track bears to the left and then sharply right.

(5) At this point leave it for a footpath to the left, and keep straight on as it becomes a track on entering a wood. Keep going forward up hill, when it becomes metalled (Bucklebury Alley, with des. res. on either side).

(6) Take a footpath to the left near the top, which in 600yds meets the road from Cold Ash to Upper Bucklebury.

(7) turn left and walk 400yds along the road you will meet the footpath at the waypoint (11: where you walk back down to the pub.)D/A::

Driving to start: About five miles from Newbury. Take the A4 towards Thatcham, then the northern relief road to the Cold Ash turn off, where go about a mile up the hill to a sharp turning back to the right.

Refreshments : The Spotted Dog, Cold Ash (RG18 9PR) a popular pub that serves good beer, while the food is generally good and inexpensive (especially the Senior Citizens meals)!
The Castle adjacent to The Spotted Dog also serves very good and inexpensive food.
