The Saltram Park Estate, Plymouth

For any visitor to Plymouth, the city offers many places to visit and explore, from its historic past, the Barbican, the Hoe, etc.

This route is part of the National Cycle Route 27 (NC27), and can be completed by cycle, including the route from Saltram Point (3). At which point NC 27 continues towards the South Hams, etc.

This route starts conveniently at the Marsh Mills Park and Ride, a short ride out from the city centre, near a hotel and campsite. The route follows the River Plym into the Saltram Estate, featuring a large country house now managed by the National Trust, passing an old Amphitheatre, with estuarial views.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Start at the park and ride entrance W3W>>>

Note: along the first section, follow the circular street sign with a fish, which is part of the N27 cycle route. Be mindful that this section is also used by cyclists.

Head south along the road. As directed, cross the road by the old level crossing following the signage under the flyover. There will be a metal sculpture of a fish on top of a waterwheel, with Marsh Mills on one side and Fresh Salt on the other, a reminder of what this area was once used for. Continue as directed over the railway line.

(1) The route will start to follow the river.

(2) The path splits, take the right-hand route, leading down and past the bird watching hides overlooking the dammed (bunded) area of the estuary, designed to attract migratory and resident birds. Continue along the well-defined path, past the Amphitheatre (Folly) to Saltram Point.

(3) Saltram Point is where the N27 route continues along The Ride, at this point keeping left with the path, which will lead up through woodland. Initially, before the hill starts to climb, the area on the right, known as Chelston Meadow, and out of interest, was once the site of the City's refuge dump, now overgrown. The route up through the valley changes from tree to field, and at the top, meets another access road onto the estate. Turn left, and past the main entrance to Saltram House (a).

(4) The route now loops past and down past the ancillary buildings, meeting up with the split in the path, leading to the bird hides. Now continue back past, and to the start (S/E).
