The Crown and Horns circular, East Ilsley

Start : The Crown and Horns, East Ilsley (RG20 7LH) Grid ref. SU 493811

(S/E) Cross the road from the pub and go up the road to the North (from the A34) for 150 yds.

(1) Take a turn to the right.

(2) In a further 100yds, turn left onto the footpath up onto the downs. In about a mile and a half uphill, this meets the Ridgeway.

(3) Turn right and follow the track for about half a mile passing an entrance to Ilsley Barn Farm on the right. Opposite some wide metal gates, turn half-right onto another track.

(4) Then, turn half right again when you meet another track. Follow this downhill for about half a mile till it meets a road.

(5) Go forward on the right for half a mile back to the pub. (S/E)

Driving to start : About 10 miles from Newbury via the A34. Take the first turn-off after the Chieveley Interchange, and turn L again for half a mile to East Ilsley.

Parking & refreshments : The Crown and Horns pub, in the centre of the village just opposite the Swan, has only limited parking, so it is advisable to book a table. The meals there have been excellent.
