Thame to Stone

This is the second stage of the multi-day route "Railways and Waterways, between Oxford and London".

A pleasant meander through the water meadows of the Thame Valley past Notley Abbey and through picturesque villages to the historic gatehouse of Eythrope Park, before diverting up a quiet private road to Stone village.

Until the work on HS2 is completed, this stage ends at Stone, a short bus ride from Aylesbury.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Railways and Waterways, between Oxford and London

Description of the walk

Start: Thame High Street (SP 703 061)

(S) Go down Church Road and follow the footpath through the churchyard.

(1) Go down the steps and keep ahead along Thame Road. Carefully cross the A418 and the busy B4011.

(2) Turn left along the pavement.

(3) At the footpath sign, turn right over an awkward stile and bear left across two more stiles.

(4) Weave through the industrial estate by following Hikers Way and then Ridge Way.

(5) Turn right on the footpath with large yellow lettering. Keep ahead into the countryside and bear left on a footpath.

(6) At the path junction, turn right. Bear left and at the path junction keep ahead through the middle of the field.

(7) At the next junction, turn left to continue the walk to Notley Abbey.

(8) From the Abbey, turn left up the hill and turn right on a path around buildings. Follow the track round to the left, go down the hill, through a gate and keep ahead to the railway.

(9) Carefully cross when the green light shows and keep ahead to a lane at Chearsley.

(10) Turn right and then left at a new signpost. Go down the steps to a lane and bear right on a footpath.

(11) Turn left at the path junction and at the stream crossing, take the left fork ahead, aiming for a distant house and telegraph pole. Go over a rickety stile (at the time of writing) to the lane.

(12) Turn right, then left at the junction. At the footpath sign, turn right, cross two fields to a road.

(13) Turn right into Nether Winchendon. Go past the church to the road junction where there is a seat.

(14) Turn right down the hill.

(15) At a footpath junction just before the old mill (house), bear slightly left on a very faint path round the bottom of the hill. Bear slightly right to a path junction at the boundary. Keep contouring the hill, crossing stiles at field boundaries, and pass to the left of a moat. Keep ahead towards a drive and go through a gate at the side of a drive on rough ground and pass Bridge Lodge.

(16) Turn right over the bridge and follow the paved drive first downhill, then steadily uphill for about a mile. Keep ahead towards the main road until you reach Stone crossroads.(E)
