Description

(S) From St. Edmund's Church Stoulton, pass the church and take the waymarked path right to the left side of the church. Take the metal gate into the lovely churchyard then exit by another metal gate, to take the narrow path between hedge and fence.

Exit by the metal gate and turn left along the grassy track between hedges. The track bears left to pass houses left to reach the gap at the end of the track (do not take the first small gap you see but continue along to the gap at the end of the track).

(1) At the gap turn right and continue down the field keeping the hedge right passing under power lines. On reaching the field corner take the kissing gate right. Go ahead with the hedge and stream left until, on the left, there is a bridge over the stream and a gate leading to a wood.

Follow the footpath left around the wood with the hedge left and the wood right. The path goes up the hill to the gate. Pass through the gate - farm buildings are visible ahead. Go ahead to the farmyard and follow the farmyard track past barns (ignoring any left sign) until the track turns to the left at Windmill Hill Farm with a black and white house right.

(2) Follow the bridleway behind a barn to a waymarked old metal gate. There is a modern metal 5 bar gate directly ahead but go left through the old gate then right keeping the same direction. Continue ahead with the hedge right, going through to the side of another 5 bar metal gate. Continue up the next field to cross the large brick bridge over the main railway line.

Leaving the bridge go half left to the corner hedge up the field with a tree on the corner. At the hedge corner continue ahead with hedge right. Carry on with the hedge right heading for a prominent group of poplar trees ahead. Looking slightly left you will see the blades of a modern windmill on the horizon.

(3) On reaching the trees you will see they enclose a plantation. Do not enter the plantation. On the right is a track/bridleway. Follow this around some bends with the hedge fringing the plantation on the left to reach a narrow road.

Cross the road and go ahead on the track (end of diversion). At the end of the track, by Kits Kitchens, take a gap right and follow the grassy track left to go behind buildings and down into the field. Go ahead down the field with the hedge right to come to a gap.

(4) Take gap and ahead up the field with power lines left to come to the mid hedge bridge and kissing gate. Take the bridge and kissing gate and go slightly left with horse paddock on your right to a kissing gate to the road ( Pub 100 paces to your right - The Berkeley, Egdon).

Cross the road and take the kissing gate into a field. Go diagonally across the field to come to the gate at the far left field corner. Take a gate and go left to reach the far right corner gate leading to the road.

(5) Go right on the road for 220 paces. Just before trees find a gate left with a kissing gate. Take the kissing gate and go ahead up the field to the far right corner kissing gate, before the cottage. Do not take the kissing gate, but stay in the field. With your back to the kissing gate go ahead with the fence right for some 70 paces to find an awkward double fence stile right.

Take the stile through the garden and the next stile through another garden to exit by another stile to the field. Go right and follow round the field edge with the hedge right to exit by a gap. Go through the second field and exit by a gap. In the third field, after 50 paces, take the hidden bridge/stile right. Go straight with Shewood Place on your right to the road.

(6) Go left on the road and right into the churchyard. Past the church immediately take the gap left into the field. Keeping the hedge right proceed to reach the junction of roads. Turn right on a minor road, which passes houses right and becomes a track.

After 400 paces take careful note where the track bends to the right. Watch for finger post at marked gap left leading into a copse. Take the gap, through the copse to find a gate into a field. Go ahead through the field hedge gap and then 1/2 L to find the bridge and gate by trees. Take gate and go with a hedge left to finally come to a far left field gate. Through the gate go right to find 7 bar metal gate leading into a field.

(7) Go right down the field to find a bridge over the river. Cross the river and go ahead to pass through trees, keep the line of oak trees on your left, and aim for a mid hedge gap (right of the far church tower). Take the gate and go ahead to find a top field gate. Take the gate and follow the vehicle track to the road.

(8) Over the road into the driveway of Holy Oak Farm go ahead on a drive past 2 gates the second leading into a field. (Down the field to your left about 300 yards is The Oak Pub / Hotel and Tearooms). Go ahead across the field to find a swing gate leading into a grassy strip with a house left, leading to the road. Follow the road ahead to pass Upton Snodsbury church left and reach the road.

(9) Cross the road and take the alleyway between houses to the wooden kissing gate and go down the field to a metal kissing gate. Go 1/2 right towards a lone tree, then continue with hedge right through 2 fields to the field corner kissing gate to the road.

(Here there is a slight difference from the Ordnance Survey Map so follow the GPS or these)

Cross the road and take the gap to the left of the metal gate (there may be a fence here). Go ahead on the cinder path with the river left to the driveway go left to take the bridge with a double metal gate.

(10) Go ½ right to the field corner to take double metal gates by single tree. Go ahead with the hedge right around the field corner through the gap with the hedge right. Enter the field and head left past mid field power poles to find the gated hedge gap.

Take the gap through the plantation to a gate onto the road. Cross the road and go over the metal stile by a gate and, after 12 paces, follow the path through the avenue of trees ignoring any paths to left or right to the end.

(11) Find a plank bridge to the right going left over the stream and metal kissing gate. Take the gate and go through the copse, to exit by a metal kissing gate. Cross the field ahead to take the corner kissing the gate to the road.

(12) Go left to the crossroads at North Piddle. (E)
