St. Wolfgang area of Austria, from Strobl to St. Wolfgang.

Beautiful (one-way) lakeside and forest trail with a perfect refreshment stop! Because much of the route is through forest, it is ideal for very hot weather. It is all on clear tracks, mostly very well surfaced.

Description of the walk

Start : Stadtpark, Strobl.

(S) From Stadtpark, Strobl, take the lakeside path (North-East) over the bridge (approx. 370m) to walk with Wolfgangsee and the lake on your left.

(1) Keep walking along the lakeshore, for around 420 m or so around the wooded mountain of Bürglstein.

(2) As you reach the second junction just past the campground on your left-hand side, turn left (North). You will go past the campground on your left and a soccer field on your right before reaching the main road.

(3) On meeting the main road, turn left (West) and walk along a short way (150m or so), then turn right up a drive that becomes a path through fields and then through a little hamlet of chalets. At the end of the hamlet, the roads drops slightly and bends to the right.

(4) At this point, take a small road off left into the woods, signposted Jausenstation "Holzerbauer" and Güterweg Aschau. On the map, this is Wanderouten Wolfgangsee. Continue on this small road, which is really a tarmacked track, through the forest to another little hamlet (just a couple of farm buildings really) called Aschau.

(5) Where the road bends left and starts to drop, take the little track up to the right through more forest.

(6) Emerge from here and turn left to find Jausenstation Holzerbauer.

(7) Leave the Jausenstation by a track heading Westwards and down into the woods. This joins the St. Rupert Pilgerweg and emerges at a cluster of farm buildings as you cross a bridge.

(8) Turn left and head down an open, winding road to Wolfgangsee.

(9) At the bottom of the small winding road, meet the main road. Cross over at the pedestrian crossing and turn right to walk along the pavement into St. Wolfgang. (E)

Notes

Start : Stadtpark, Strobl.

Transport : It may be possible to catch a bus (or boat) from St. Wolfgang to Strobl to start this walk.

Terrain : It is all on clear tracks, mostly very well surfaced.

Note : Because much of the route is through forest, it is ideal for very hot weather.

Refreshments : Call in at Jausenstation Holzerbauer, where they grow their own apples, so you can pause for refreshments such as home-made apple strudel (pie) and cider. This is probably about the half-way point, or maybe just after.

Worth a visit

Be sure to walk a few yards up the grassy hill to the front of the Jausenstation for fabulous views down to the lake of Wolfgangsee.
