Description of the walk

(S/E) Park at the Chapelle de Sauveterre, walk back down the D503 for a few dozen metres, then take the first path on the left. The path leads along the flat section until you reach the first junction (Correo signpost).

(1) Take the first path up to the left towards Rougier and the Cuchon de Charance.
The path climbs through the woods (do not take the paths branching off to the left). Continue to the junction marked by the Rougier signpost.

(2) Ignore the main path, which descends slightly to the left, and take the one that climbs in broad steps up the southern ridge. After a steep climb through a mountain pasture (temporary electric fence and horses), you’ll reach the top of a beautiful grassy ridge at an altitude of 1550m (below the Cuchon).

(3) Descend via the same route until you return to a small junction (at 1,475m). Take the path on the right which descends gently towards the woods and the Selle torrent.
Before reaching the stream, turn onto the path that descends more steeply to the left to rejoin the starting path at the Rougier signpost junction.

(2) This time, turn right to head down towards the Selle stream. Cross it to reach the ruins of the old Rougier farm.

(4) Walk past the ruins and continue along the forest track that runs alongside the fields. You’ll reach the junction with theGR®93.

(5) Ignore the path branching off to the right at the first junction; at the next junction, turn left onto theGR®93, which leads downhill.
Please note: at the 1261 mark, be sure to take the very narrow path that descends straight ahead between the trees and rocks. Do not take the forest tracks that go down to the right, nor the well-marked track on the right that leads to a field (dead end).
You will then join a path that passes by a wooden house, then through walnut orchards. Continue until you reach the D503 road just above the Chapel of Sauveterre (S/E).

(3) It’s the perfect spot to take in the scenery and enjoy a family picnic

Worth a visit

Chapelle de Sauveterre:
The Chapel of Notre-Dame de Sauveterre was built in the17th century. In the past, people would walk there in procession on Whit Monday from La Roche-des-Arnaud to ask for a blessing on the fruits of the earth.

A pleasant walk to fill an afternoon when the weather was a bit iffy.
Best done in the direction indicated (the steep, stony path in the first section would no doubt be more unpleasant on the way down).
Is it a popular route? Yes (with Rambo-type characters in camouflage gear armed with guns). Perhaps some hunters, although it’s only 2 September.

I set off this morning for Le Cuchon, but turned back because of the sky at the 1550-metre mark described in this route, and ended up on this circular loop described here. I can confirm that the view is absolutely stunning, especially with stormy skies. A lovely walk to get the day off to a good start.
