Val Falcina nature trail

Lago del Mis is a little gem nestled between two peaks of the Belluno Dolomites. Its steep banks offer few opportunities for hiking and enjoying the crystal-clear waters. However, at the mouth of the Val Falcina, in the middle of the southern shore of the lake, a nature trail has been created. It starts from the beach at Pian Falcina and climbs up to the heights above. In about an hour, you reach the bottom of a valley where the stream has carved out pleasant pools, then return to the starting point via a trail that follows the flooded bed of a branch of the lake. The route is dotted with information panels explaining the geological and ecological context of the Val del Mis.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park, go left of the central bar and follow the path that leads to the toilets. On the right, just next to them, a sign describes the route to follow and the different stages of the circuit. Take the path that climbs to the right and goes around the plan. The slope is steep from the start and remains so until you reach the Col de la Feda, where you will find the first information board for the circuit.

(1) Go over the pass and continue climbing to the left, but much more gently. You will then enter a beautiful forest where the path winds its way until you reach the Casera Scalada.

(2) Pass below this isolated building (a charcoal burner's hut?) and continue through the forest on a path that descends slightly. When the slope becomes steeper, you are not far from the Val del Burt, where beautiful streams sometimes flow.

(3) Cross the stream bed and climb up the opposite bank. The trail then skirts around a ridge before plunging into the Val Falcina, whose contours become clearer as you approach.

(4) Jumping from stone to stone, you can easily cross the stream and cool off in the inviting pools. Take advantage of this opportunity if you feel like it, as it is the only place on the route where you can touch the water. Continue by climbing up the other bank via a few steep switchbacks, then follow the balcony path that runs along the valley until you reach the clear waters of the lake below.

(5) At the lake shore, cross a tributary stream that descends from the right. Next, you will come to several viewpoints where you can feast your eyes on the beauty of the site before finally arriving at the foot of the bridge that spans the flooded valley. Cross the bridge to reach the other bank and Pian Falcina (S/E).

Notes

The route starts from the Pian Falcina area, located about halfway along Lago del Mis, along the SP 2. This is one of the only friendly places on the lake, with a bar, restaurant and campsite. You can also take a dip in the crystal-clear lake, if the water temperature allows.

Worth a visit

If you continue to the end of the lake, there are two sites not to be missed, although they can get very busy in summer. These are the Cadini del Brenton, a series of ten pools carved out by the torrent, which can be reached in a few minutes from the Ponte del Mis, and the Cascata Soffia, an amazing waterfall flowing under a rocky overhang, which is also just a stone's throw away on the other side of the Ponte del Mis.

You can also treat yourself to a burger alla moda bellunese, i.e. with a pastin instead of the usual minced beef, at the Café Sophia, just before the waterfall. It's a real treat.
