Pradelles - Cheylard-l'Évêque

This is the 4th stage of a complete journey on the Chemin de Stevenson between Le Puy-en-Velay and Alès. This stage marks the transition from the Pays des Puys du Velay, with its open, hilly landscapes, to the Gévaudan, with its more enclosed landscapes and deep woodlands. The route follows the GR®70 (Red and White waymarkers).

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Chemin de Stevenson (Robert Louis Stevenson Trail)

Description of the walk

Start: Start from Place du Foirail in Pradelles.
Waymarkers : GR®70 Red and White waymarkers.

(S) On the main road (N88), head towards the end of the square, walking past the boulangerie (bakery) on the left towards Place de la Halle. At the end of the square, turn right into the small Rue du Portalet (street), which passes in front of the Tourist Office, then immediately left into Rue du Mazel (street). This takes you into the old medieval area.

Leave the first small street on your left and take the second on the left, which is the continuation of Rue du Mazel. As you continue, you pass under the Portail du Besset (gate); you then continue straight ahead along the Rue Basse, at the end of which you come to the chapel and the ancient hospital.

At the chapel, you again pass under a gate; at the next Y-intersection, you carry on into Rue Basse, going past the cemetery on your left. The road soon becomes a path. Ignore the paths on your left and right and continue straight ahead, starting the long descent to Langogne.

(1) 450m further down, you cross the Route de la Gare (road) and continue straight on for over 1.3 Km. Let yourself go downhill, ignoring the paths to your left and right. After a set of trees on your left, you come to a path junction.

(2) The first 90° to the left and the second at an angle to the left; this is the one you take. You continue along the same path for 1 Km, ignoring those to the right and left, until you come to a bend in the Route du Mas Neuf (road). Continue ahead down to the bottom of the road (on your left is an old bridge). You've now reached the Route de Pignol (road), which you turn left onto to reach the N88. Follow the road to the right, using the car park and the median strip; 200m further on, you'll reach the bridge over the Allier river.

(3) You are now at the entrance of Langogne, and cross the bridge (towards the town center); (warning : you are now crossing Langogne on a new section of the GR®70). Follow the N88 as it curves to the left until you reach a Carrefour Contact (supermarket); turn left into the Carrefour Contact car park, then right into the passage behind the Hôtel Gaillard.

Go through the gate and take the path to the park along the Allier. Follow the Allier and the Langouyrou stream which flows into it, then pass under the railway bridge to reach the D326. Cross the road to follow Rue du Moulin de Sicard (street). At the end of this street, you come to Avenue du Maréchal Foch, which you cross at an angle to Rue de la Honde. Then, turn right into Rue de la Tariflette (yes like the cheese), then left into Rue Félix Viallet.

(4) You've now reached the historical town center, which we'll go around via Boulevard Notre-Dame and Place des Halles (although you may prefer to visit the interior, Place des Moines). Turn left along a short stretch of Boulevard De Gaulle, then right into Rue du Pont Vieux, which crosses the Langouyrou river.

(5) Immediately after the bridge, turn right into Rue Adrien Troupel, which meanders into Avenue du Maréchal Joffre, which you follow left for 200m. Turn right onto Rue du 11 Novembre 1918 to leave Langogne. At the sign indicating the exit from the town, leave the path to the left and, at the Y-junction, take the left-hand way to continue straight ahead for 1 Km (toward Brugeyrolles - Les Chabalious).

(6) At the junction, leave the way towards Brugeyrolles to follow the path straight ahead for just under 1 Km, until you come to a Y-junction, where you turn right and continue climbing steadily. At the top, you come to a path on the edge of a wood which you take to the right; after 600m you come to a crossroads.

(7) Go straight ahead (towards Le Monteil). When you reach the first house in Le Monteil, take the path on the left, which winds through a wood. At the end of the wood, you come to a road which you take to the right, immediately crossing a small stream; the road then twists to the right as it climbs towards the village of Saint-Flour-de-Mercoire. Continue straight on until you reach the center of the village, where you come to the D71 (small sports and play area on your right).

(8) Turn left on the D71 as far as the last house in the village, and 200m after that, as the D71 bends to the right, take the road in front of you. After 400m, you're back on the D71, which you take again to enter the hamlet of L'Herm.

(9) At the first crossroads, take the small road on your right, then 50m further on, continue straight ahead on the small road which soon becomes a path. At the next Y-intersection, take the right-hand way and continue straight ahead, skirting woods before joining a path.

(10) Turn left; 50 m further on, at another Y-junction, take the right-hand branch into the woods. Another 300m and you find the third Y-junction and take the right-hand branch.

(11) Cross a stream (Donozau) which leads to a small road on the left. This road leads you 500m further to the hamlet of Sagne-Rousse.

(12) At the end of the hamlet, turn right just after the last house. You'll pass through a wood on your left, then another, and continue straight ahead without worrying about the paths to your left or right. After 2 Km, you reach Fouzillac village and take the small road that runs through the village from one end to the other. Also pass Fouzillic.

(13) 300m after the last houses, take the track on your left. A little further on at the Y-junction, take the left-hand way which gradually leads into a wood, and gradually descends.

(14) Almost at the end of the wood, you come to a path junction where you turn left, and 300m further on, you come across a track. Turn right and continue downhill for 1 Km until you reach the D71, which you take in front of you. This takes you into the village of Cheylard-l'Évêque, and you follow the road to the little church which is the end of the hike (E).

Practical information

_Start:__ Start from Place du Foirail in Pradelles.

Waymarkers : GR®70 Red and White waymarkers.
⚠️ Note the GR®70 may have undergone minor changes from what is shown on the map (in particular to avoid certain stretches of road that are a little busy).

Refreshments: (4) Langogne: many shops
⚠️If you're doing several stages of the Chemin de Stevenson, be aware that Langogne is the last place where you'll find any shops, especially grocery stores, for a long time; you'll have to do another stage and a half before you'll find any shops again.

Accommodation : (E) Cheylard: ⚠️note that there is virtually only one refuge if you have to stay there, but you can also stay in Fouzillac. However, there are no shops in either place.

In the nearby area

(S) Pradelles: old medieval center
(3) Langogne: old medieval quarter too
Beautiful crossings of woods and forests
(E) Cheylard: typical local stone village

They were adorable
And given how cold it was on the trail, it was a welcome break.

Well-marked route.
Beautiful scenery.
Quite a bit of tarmac after Langogne before returning to the undergrowth (waypoint 7) where it's pleasant to have a picnic.
At the Gîte de la Tartine, waypoint 9, you can top up your water bottles.
At marker 10, the GR70 and Visorando signposts diverge slightly but soon merge, as the GR70 signposts are not very visible at this point.
A good part of the route is in the undergrowth as far as Cheylard l'Évêque from point 10 and is very pleasant in very hot weather (hike done in early October 2023).

Hello jackinthebox30,
You write :
First of all, the author spends his time describing the route, rather badly in fact, even though it is very well signposted. So it's not very useful and it's even a bit annoying to keep hearing about the Y, the path coming from the left, etc.
It's the very principle of Visorando to describe hikes as precisely as possible. The markings on the ground can disappear, but not the written information.
The map accompanying the hike you did was indeed on OSM, but it has been replaced by an IGN map. Thank you for pointing this out.
Note: all previous reviews are 5/5.

Hello,
I'm sorry to have to say that this information sheet, as well as the following ones (up to Le Bleymard), is a disaster.

First of all, the author spends his time describing the route, rather badly in fact, even though it is very well signposted. So it's not very useful and it's even a bit annoying to keep hearing about the Y, the path coming from the left, etc.

The worst thing, specific to this sheet, is that the track is made on an old openstreetmap background totally to the west. Distances are not respected, some villages on the route are not even indicated on the map, and there are no topo details! Put it on the good old IGN État Major map!

For those who would like to shorten the stage a little while taking advantage of a nice alternative route after l'Herm, avoiding Sagne Rousse, Fouzilhac and Fouzilhic:
At point 9, turn left for 50m and then right at the second Y as described. At the third Y, instead of turning right towards Sagne Rousse, turn left onto the very good path through the woods that leads to Le Serret and then joins the small road coming from Sagne Rousse just before Laubarnès. Do not enter Laubarnès, but join the GR via the track that passes the Cham cross (shortly after point 12 in the description).
This alternative route poses no problems of orientation with the map, beautiful undergrowth then pretty views over the plateau.
