Description of the walk

At Saint Bonnet-du-Gard, take the 'chemin du Sablas' towards the north and park at the Place de la Fontaine or 30 m further on, in front of the Town Hall.

(1) You start directly on the GR 6 waymarked in red and white. The tarmacked route ends after the windmill and turns into a gravel path. You will reach a plateau. At the Sablas post, at an altitude of 121 m, don't follow the signs in the direction of Pont du Gard-Combe de Roussière, 2.8 km, as this will be the return route.

(2) Take the left (still on the GR, but the waymarkers are often sometimes quite far apart). Carry on for about 400 m and turn to the right (to the NNE, not shown on the signs, but still on the GR).

(3) Follow the path slightly downhill for about 2 km, you will cross over the remains of the aqueduct. Leave towards the left (still on the GR) where you will find the markers. Take the tunnel to end up directly on the Pont du Gard at the height of the canal. (4)

Leave in the direction of the look out on the left - there are waymarkers. Make the most of the viewpoint and continue on the path downwards toward the bridge. You are on the right bank of the Gardon, go under an arch of the bridge, continue on and take the ramp to cross the bridge over the Gardon.
On your right, you will see the centre with its shops.
You can climb directly ahead to reach the level of the aqueduct.
This second part is not quite as nice as the first part.
Continue on following the GR waymarkers slightly to the left, through the shrubs. The path winds, then goes alongside the ruins of the aqueduct.

(5) It meets a tarmacked route, without traffic, at 57 m, take the left (waymarked GR), cross through a barrier. At the fork, take the left, then a small steep path heading downward to re-join this route. Pass in front of the Saint Pierre chapel, which is in a very bad state.
The route ahead takes you to the Gardon where you can picnic.
Continue on the route in the direction of La Bégude Saint Pierre, waymarked GR, passing by the post of les Bégudes, at an altitude of 34 m, in the direction of Barque Vieille.
Continue along this route which goes alongside the properties, after having passed by a small stream. While the route turns to the right, straight on you will see a path which heads towards the Gardon with warnings about swimming. Access is fairly easy along a large band of gravel. (6)

To return, take the path in the opposite direction to the Pont du Gard. You can find variations in the surroundings of the Pont du Gard. Cross the bridge, take the left and continue in the direction of the car park on the right bank.

(7) After the building marked 'Séminaires & congrès', take the path to the right which climbs upwards, signposted to Bonnet du Gard.
At the end of this long and steady climb through the forest, you reach Le Sablas at an altitude of 121 m, (2) and continue forwards on the stony path which goes back down to the village following the GR waymarking.

Practical information

No water points on this circular walk, but there are several shops at the Pont du Gard site amenities. The paths are quite stony so good shoes are recommended.
After the Saint Pierre Chapel, in a poor state, the route described enables you to reach the banks of the Gardon where you can have a picnic.

Access to the Pont du Gard site is free for hikers, as is explicitly stated on this webpage:http://www.ot-pontdugard.com/accueil/pat...

This hike to the Pont du Gard is magnificent.
The only downside is that this route is very busy.
And yesterday there was a very strong mistral wind, which must have put a lot of people off.

This route is easy to follow up to point 4 and very pleasant, with a beautiful view of the Pont du Gard. However, there is no point in going to point 5 (bank of the Gardon) as the riverbank is flooded and the route can only be taken by road.
From point 4, we'll try to get to the fountain next time, which should be more interesting.

Lovely walk, despite being very close to an ultra-touristy site, with beautiful views of the Pont on both the outward and return legs.

An easy walk that took us past the impressive Pont du Gard. The first part of the walk from the start to point 3 is very pleasant. On the other hand, the passage on the other side of the aqueduct is busier and has lots of footpaths, so be sure to follow the map with the GPS. From point 4 to point 5, there's no point, you're on a road for several kilometres, which we also used on the way back... however, the pebble beach is very pleasant for a picnic, with a refreshing dip in the Gardon.
A small comment at point 6, after the building marked Séminaire there is a path on the right that goes uphill but the sign for Saint Bonnet du Gard is higher up on the path. Perhaps you could clarify this in the description, as we hesitated to take this path.

An interesting walk that takes in the Pont du Gard in an unusual way.
Some parts of the route are very stony, so good shoes are essential.
I would advise against this walk in summer, as the paths can turn into torrents during thunderstorms.

The starting point is well known and signposted for hikers, and the Pont du Gard can be reached quickly via the heath. There is plenty of room to stroll around the Pont du Gard site, and then leave on the footpaths. The second part before returning is a little uninteresting apart from seeing the chapel and a pebble beach overlooking the Gardon. But well worth doing. For information on how to get to the Gardon by the beach, when you cross the small bridge over which runs a mini branch of the river that is almost dry, just after the "S" road, take the small dirt track on the left behind the fence and the sign "No wild barbecues, fire"....It's possible to do the start, the Pont du Gard and part of the rest in the heath with children, in a short time, THINK OF A BOTTLE OF WATER, a swimming costume AND A PICNIC 😉🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽 and enjoy the walk.

Excellent discovery of the bridge and the surrounding remains.
However, part 4-5-4 is a round trip on tarmac, not the most captivating.
At point 6, after the "Séminaires" building, the signs for "St Bonnet du Gard" have disappeared and you have to take the path marked with a yellow cross.

The highlight of this walk is arriving at the top of the cliffs overlooking the Gardon. This approach allows you to discover the Pont du Gard from different angles, from the summit down to the foot of the cliffs on a little path that is not very popular.
Another interesting point on this walk is the return to the Place de la Fontaine in the village of Saint Bonnet du Gard, where an inn awaits us, inviting us to recharge our batteries in the shade of magnificent plane trees.
It's worth noting that we've only done half the route. We didn't go beyond the Pont du Gard. This allowed us to have lunch at Saint Bonnet.
A brief comment on the tour description. It would be a good idea to specify that the starting point is on the Place de la nouvelle Mairie, at the bottom of the village of Saint Bonnet, as the car's GPS took us to the centre of the village, apparently towards the Place de l'ancienne Mairie....

Cancels and replaces my previous message

A pleasant walk. In the middle of a heatwave we shortened the route, without going beyond the Pont du Gard as there was the possibility of swimming at the foot of the bridge.
At point 6 there are toilets and water points, so you can refill your water bottles.
From point 1 to point 3: we're on a track exposed to the sun.
From point 6 to point 1: under the trees, in the shade.
If you want to visit the Pont du Gard with children, it's best to walk directly from point 1 to point 6, especially in very hot weather.
For parking, it's best to go straight to the shady car park near the town hall.
Many thanks for this itinerary, which allows us to discover the Pont du Gard in a different way, which I think is better.
Farid.

Easy walk with children in the shade most of the time, except at the start, with a fine finish at the bridge or at the foot of the path for a swim.

It was a pleasant walk, but in the middle of a heatwave we reduced the number of kilometres we walked, without going beyond the Pont du Gard, as it was possible to get a doughnut at the foot of the bridge.
There are toilets and water points at point 6, so you can refill your water bottles.
From point 1 to point 3 we're on a track exposed to the sun.

Hello,
A superb and varied walk.
We tried to cool off by the Gardon before point 5 but it was impossible to get there. I think we made a mistake; we should have gone past the campsite and down to the gravel beach. We'll have to do it again!
The return journey after the Pont du Gard takes you up a very shady path, but it's a bit monotonous because it's steep.
The car park at Place de la Fontaine is very convenient and the bar-restaurant and fountain invite you to refresh yourself on the way back.

I'd been dreaming of doing this hike, which was supposed to take me to this lovely aqueduct that I hadn't visited yet.
But, big disappointment, a humming noise all along the way.
Apparently there's a circuit nearby that gives the impression of being close to a car race.
Avoid this hike; drive straight to the Pont car park;
What a waste!!!
