Start from the Gourbit car park, which is reserved for hikers. Easy to access and plenty of spaces available.
(S/E) Continue along the path in the direction you arrived.
(1) Turn left and begin a magnificent climb through an enchanted forest reminiscent of "The Lord of the Rings". Join a forest track.
(2) Follow it to the right for a good hundred metres, then leave it to take the path on the left, which comes out higher up in the forest and reaches the Col de Lastris.
(3) Head right to follow the Crête du Courtal Terrous ridge and reach Roc de Querquéou, a pretty rock formation that makes for some great photos.
(4) Continue along the ridge, admiring the view of the Ariège Pyrenees and Andorra, until you reach Pla de Madame (altitude 1,906 metres).
(5) Continue along the ridge, passing close to Pic de Boucarle, then cross the Pas de l'Étang d'Artax (altitude 1966). Climb up to Pic de Bassibié (altitude 2114).
(6) Majestic view of the Ariège Pyrenees and the peaks of Andorra. Retrace your steps and begin the descent to the Étang d'Artax on the left, following the path on the eastern shoulder of Pic de Bassibié.
(7) Turn right to continue the descent to the Cabane d'Artax. Reach the banks of the lake.
(8) Return to the Cabane d'Artax and begin the descent, first across open terrain, then through forest. You will come out onto a forest road.
(9) Turn left and follow it to its end, then continue along the path which eventually joins the fork at the start.
(1) Continue straight ahead to the car park (S/E).
