Via Nogeon and Nongloire, starting from Étrépilly

A superb ride on horseback (at a walk: 4 hours; at a trot: 3 hours; at three gaits: 1 hour 30 minutes) but also possible on foot (5 hours) or by bike (3 hours) through the fields, past roe deer and along the banks of the Thérouanne. Most of the paths are grassy or dirt tracks and very well maintained; there are a few roads to cross, but with good visibility, or to follow – though these are all fairly quiet roads, generally with grassy verges for safety. The route takes you across the plateaus; it can be windy in places, and the route is fairly open, so take care in hot weather. In the depths of winter, it’s a very pleasant walk, with all paths fully accessible.

Description of the walk

Park at the start of the Chemin de Fontaine.

(S/E) Walk down a little towards the D401 and turn left onto the Chemin des Zouaves; take the tarmac slope, which then becomes a grassy track; carry on straight ahead until you are forced to turn right at the Haut Buisson plot.

(1) Turn right towards the D146.

(2) Without joining this road, turn left just before it, staying on the grass track, then carry on straight ahead.

(3) Cross the D146A3, then carry on straight ahead along the dirt track until you reach Maulny Farm.

(4) Turn left onto the grassy track until you reach the right-hand bend at Les Bruyères de Maulny.

(5) Follow this bend and carry on straight ahead, crossing the small road at l’Orme Fournier.

(6) Take the first grassy track on the left towards Nogeon and head for this hamlet.

(7) Follow Rue du Soldat Guillemard (D18), first turn left then right, and continue to Fosse Martin.

(8) Take the first dirt track on the left to go round the village.

(9) On leaving the village, take the D9 on the left.

(10) Turn left at the first road at the tile works plot towards the D146A3, then take the first dirt track on the right, between the Vaubrard and Petit Noyer plots. Continue straight on to Nongloire.

(11) Carry on along the small road opposite, which leads down towards Fontaine-les-Nonnes.

(12) At the first junction, take the C1 local road to the right until you reach the first track on the left.

(13) Follow this track, passing in front of Fontaine-les-Nonnes Castle. After crossing the Thérouanne, keep left and continue straight on until you reach the road.

(14) In front of the ‘La Grille’ plot, turn left. You can cool your animals’ paws or give them a drink from the River Thérouanne a little further on, on the left. Return to the road heading towards the D38.

(15) Take the D38 on the left and cross over the River Thérouanne. Leave the D38 and continue straight ahead for 50 metres, near the Chaussée stables.

(16) Turn right onto the undulating dirt track to join the Chemin de Fontaine and follow it to the right to reach Étrépilly (S/E).

A bit of tarmac, the rest of the paths are very pleasant dirt and grass tracks; this route can also be done by bike. Enjoyable in both directions.

Most of the grassy paths are very well maintained; there are no roads to cross or use. A ride across the plateau; winds may be present in places; the route is fairly open, so take care in hot weather. Best enjoyed in the warmer months, as the section running alongside the marshes is impassable in winter; alternatively, take the northern section via the Étrépilly road in winter.
