This walk takes you to a superb little dam lost in the middle of the New Zealand forest. Walk through a forest, skirting a stream and following ancient irrigation canal.

Description of the walk

Start: Greys Dam Freecamp, Lawrence.

(S/E) At the end of the car park, take the small path that runs alongside the lake, gaining height. The path soon enters the forest and almost never leaves it. Continue to the first ford.

(1) Pass through and continue along the path to the second ford.

(2) Carry on along the path, gaining height to reach an old irrigation canal.

(3) Follow it for several hundred meters to cross another ford.

(4) Continue on to the last ford.

(5) Continue on the path.

(6) Reach Otago Dam. Enjoy the view before heading back down the same trail to the starting point (S/E).

Superb little hike in a native New Zealand forest, starting from a freecamp for self-centred vans. The arrival on this peaceful little island has a nice Canadian feel to it!
