Ogbourne St George to Avebury, The Ridgeway the Other Way

The Ridgeway the other way. The National Trail from NE to SW. The Stage 6 is a short walk as you will probably have to continue a bit further to get a place to stay and maybe head to Swindon or Trowbridge for onward travel. The countryside is a mixture of arable land, changing colour with the seasons, and areas of sheep or cattle grazed grassland. Some of the best views are from Smeathe’s Ridge as you climb gently up to Barbury Castle.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The Ridgeway the Other Way in six stages

Description

Start : Junction High Street and Marlborough Road in Ogbourne St George. (SN8 1TQ) Grid ref. SU 202 706

(S) From the centre of Ogbourne St George, head North East along Marlborough Road under the A346 and turn right along Bytham Road.

(1) Bear left up Old Chase Road as far as the sign post for The Ridgeway off to the right. Go gently downhill to cross Bytham Road again.

(2) Continue across the fields, over an old railway track and past some farm buildings to reach the A346 at Southend.

(3) Go straight across the road along Hallam Lane past a thatched cottage and over the River Og. Continue up the lane to a T-junction.

(4) Turn right to go along the lane to a junction with Draycott Close and High Street coming out of Ogbourne St George.

(5) Keep straight ahead for 50m then turn left to follow the track along the base of Coombe Down and Smeathe's Ridge. Eventually reach a junction near Upper Herdswick Farm and turn right.

(6) Bear left off the road as indicated at a small metal gate to come out near the Barbury Castle car park.

(7) Follow the track out North West from the car park to go over Barbury Castle and down to the road junction through another small metal gate. Go right for about 50m then left along another track. Bear South West down to the White Horse car park.

If you have time, make the detour North West along a well-trodden path to see the White Horse Hill Figure and then back to the trail.

Continue along the trail past Hackpen Hill and Berwick Bassett Down. Go past an old pit (fenced and filled with water) to drop down gently to Herepath or Green Street at Overton Down.

(8) Go through a small metal gate and keep heading South-South-West along the track. Follow the indications for The Ridgeway to reach Overton Hill.

(9) Go back along the track to take a footpath off to the left that goes around the base of Avebury Down to reach Herepath or Green Street.

(10) Then head left (South-West) into Avebury(E)
