Chicory mills and drying houses around the River Oye

A very long time ago, the sea covered this area at high tide, but the ingenuity of the Benedictine monks inthe 10th century led to the construction of a network of drainage channels: the watergangs. This area, with its light, sandy soil, is ideal for growing chicory.

Large buildings made of yellow or red brick were once used to dry chicory roots. The people made the most of this gift from Mother Nature by building mills.

Worth a visit

(S) Saint-Médard Church in Oye-Plage
Saint-Médard Church dates fromthe 19th century. The building is reminiscent of the English Tudor style, reflecting the British occupation inthe 15th century. A stained-glass window installed during the restoration commemorates Thomas Beckett’s visit to the town. You can also admire magnificent stained-glass windows by the artist Henri Lhotellier.

Chicory drying sheds
Inthe 20th century, chicory cultivation, ideal for sandy soils, shaped life in this part of the Audruicq region. After harvesting, the chicory roots were pulled up using a ‘fork’ and transported to the nearest drying shed. There were nearly 60 drying houses in the area. Today, chicory cultivation and drying have been modernised but remain important elements of the local heritage and collective memory.
An old chicory drying house has been restored to its original state and is open to visitors every third Sunday of the month from April to October, from 10am to 12pm.

Guemps Bridge Mill
Overlooking the coastal plain, the Guemps mill is still in working order. Restored, it is recognisable by its rotating roof, overlooking the flat countryside. It bears witness to the intense agricultural activity and processing of produce in the drainage canal area during the19th century.

Moulin Blanc d’Offekerque
This mill was first recorded as early as 1809. Thanks to the care of three generations of the Lianne family, the mill is still standing. In the past, the yellow bricks of this mill were covered with a white lime plaster, hence its name.

Leaning Tower
During the Second World War, the Germans built a church-shaped blockhouse to mislead Allied pilots. At the end of the war, the Germans attempted to destroy this blockhouse, but the explosive charge used was too weak and the tower was left in a strange position, hence its name: the Leaning Tower.

A very pretty walk through wheat and flax fields along the River Oye. There are some beautiful houses to see. You just need to be very careful and follow the Visorando map when the signs are a little unclear. Otherwise, it's a lovely route. We saw a mill dating back to the Revolution.

A lovely cycle ride along narrow roads winding through countless canals. The route is signposted with permanent road signs located before each junction (“mills and drying houses”, green signs on a white background).

A lovely ride through the flat countryside. A mix of quiet country lanes and a few stretches on busier roads.
The small roads are sometimes in poor condition, so not very comfortable, but hey, you make do.
